The current Indian XI's ability against spin is overrated. Pujara, Rahane and Ashwin are the only real good bats against spin and the rest are either inconsistent or just about average. Tricky total on a genuine turner might get really interesting.
Vijay obviously

I think Ronchi legitimately is one of the seven most likely NZ batsmen available to score runs in India, but I have no faith in him at all opening. Sure it's India, but they'll still pick at least one seamer and give him the new ball, and that'll be a problem for Ronchi. I think I'd rather Williamson or Watling open if Ronchi was going to play, and the could backfire to such an extent that I'd just pick Guptill instead.
I agree with this, Ronchi is even more likely than Guptill to simply nick off no matter who the seamers are (and Bhuvi/Shami are more than adequate). If Ronchi has to be accommodated I'd probably move Watling up just for this series, otherwise just give Guptill the first test and bring Ronchi in if he fails. By not picking Raval NZ just made things more difficult for themselves.

Open with Watling, and then have him and Raunchy take turns with the gloves each session. I mean obviously it's a stupid idea but it'd definitely add to Hess' reputation for inventive if not necessarily well thought out innovations in team structure.

Could've earned an easy like by getting Ronchi into that XI somehow.

Seriously, Rohit is causing so many unnecessary problems in terms of team selection because he needs to be accommodated somehow. The fact that we've completely thrown our settled top order out of whack is a disgrace.

Those comments saying he needs an extended run of chances were very worrying to me.

Thought three spinners would be the first choice bowing lineup? Then again Ishant has generally done well against NZ so wouldn't be surprised if he's a lock in.
