Sure, I wouldn't have put it past KW/Taylor to form a good partnership, but you've said it yourself, SA only really needed to break that and it would have been an up-hill battle.

I wouldn't say doom and gloom either, just pointing out in the context of that match, their bowling attack, that particular wicket & our position of 15/2, they had more than their nose in front.
We're pretty much always 15/2.

Incidentally, If Steyn has that opinion of Wagner, what the **** would he think of Southee when it comes to the old 'courage' stakes. lol.

That 77 on debut reminds me a bit if Darren Gough's half century in one of his early tests, SCG 95. Very different circumstances but in both cases looked like we were watching definite allrounder potential. Gough did eventually end up at no.11. Though i dont think he ever batted with the kind of total disregard for his ability that Southee often shows.

I guess anything's better than 45 A.O and Jeetan Patel on that tour.

Stephn mentioned NZ needs an economical spinner.

He was here last time around and unfortunately was made a scapegoat that ended his NZ career. He's still playing and destroying at first class and List A level.

That was my Jeetan Patel post for the thread.

Jeets turned down a spot playing for NZ in 2014 for the Windies tour. We've played 21 Tests since then.

Not ridiculous to think he could have taken a good 70-80 wickets @ 35ish or better. Definitely a player we should have persevered with a little more.

I can understand it from the selectors pov though. You can't really pick a player who makes himself unavailable between April and September every year.

I mean more in the sense that from 2012 Jeets should have been our frontline spinner, would've prevented him from flogging off to England at this stage of his career.

The way it was put to him it sounded like Hesson was basically offering him a one-off tour unless he bowled the house down. Despite being the best spinner in the country, no central contract offered...at a time when far worse players were being given central contracts. Not much likelihood of playing further tours...they just didn't make him a reasonable offer.

It was incredibly poor man-management from a guy who's whole coaching philosophy is around man management.

Is that all true though in terms of it just being a one-off unless he turned into Murali?

Must admit to never thinking Jeets was much to write home about. but he has carved up in English domestic cricket for a few years now, which surprised me.

IIRC his first class average in NZ domestic was >40.

I think he'll be needed for the India tour, hope Hesson is willing to be flexible there. He didnt do particularly well on the last 2 India tours (apart from the final day at Bangalore), but he'll be a better choice any day than the incumbent trio.
