The Bairstow/Ali partnership becoming one for the ages, in terms of recurring things. Love it.
Bairstow is quickly becoming as annoying as Prior was in his peak. **** never failed to add runs and create partnerships when the top order failed.

Ultimately, dropping Vince and not replacing him with a batsman is both 1) deciding there's a problem with England's number four bat, and then 2) Not actually attempting to find a new number four bat.

Just a way of dithering around the issue while taking no steps to fix it.

People so keen to weaken a strength.

Can understand why they would want to do in India (although I still don't think it is a great idea) but should never happen at home. Bairstow to 6 and then Stokes to 7 would be fair enough though.
If Bairstow doesn't improve his keeping then a better keeper at 7 (or even 8 or 9 with Moeen and Woakes in the side) and Bairstow at 5 probably improves the team significantly. You could also justify it if there's literally no middle order players that would offer more with the bat than say Bairstow 5 Buttler 7.

Yes. I'd only consider Bairstow moving up a place to accommodate the 2nd spinner when we're in the SC or UAE, and I don't really like it either.
Actually I still wonder whether Root should be at 4 instead of 3, but if pushed I'd probably go with it. Unless Scaly's right about Borthick being the answer to our prayers at number 3.

The hilarious thing about this over rates carp is that 2 Tests ago they showed the scorecard from the Old Trafford Test where Bob Simpson scored a triple and England bored themselves to 240/2 off 120 overs on day one.

Frankly, faster over-rates can go **** themselves if that's the sort of cricket that gets served up.

Given the improvements in physical fitness, perhaps session times could be extended if it's that much of an issue.
This.

Never understood why play will end 8 overs short when it's still bright and dry. One of those charmingly inexplicable things that cricket does, I suppose.

This is certainly something that I would understand more than picking a 6th bowler but still think Bairstow can be a decent enough keeper, if Buttler was a brilliant one then that might change things.

Don't think anyone would moan if after the winter or even during if he has a shocker they decided Bairstow wasn't up to it with the gloves and just played him as a bat. The key is getting in a good enough keeper who can score enough runs, Buttler not playing any first class cricket this year means he probably isn't the answer anyway so Foakes probably comes into the reckoning if he is as good as Alec Stewart says.

Didn't need that wicket at all after rebuilding so nicely. Important knock but we needed Jonny to go big there. Need to find a way to get above 300 at least.

Been impressed with Sarf's keeping this series. Improved a great deal after that dropped catch of Amir's bowling at Lords, and not just with nicks but overall keeping, especially when Pakistan were bowling to a 5th stump on Day 4 in the 3rd test

With England's lower order strength they can afford to just pick the best keeper.

5. Bairstow
6. Stokes
7. Moeen
8. Woakes
9. Keeper
10. Broad
11. Jimmeh

And that's assuming the best keeper is as good a batsman as say, Ian Healy.
