Not a chance, tier below Cook and Warner. Also he is 32, bad series and he could be done for his career.
You're joking right? Runs at home and in all our away tours except NZ and this series iirc and one of the very few batsmen who looked like he knew what he was doing in the recent series on minefields vs SA.

Not as good as Cook, I agree, but he's the 3rd best opener in the world for me and not that far off Warner. Definitely not someone who deserves to be dropped after a bad series.

Ashwin and Saha such gems.

So Bangar confirmed Vijay was available for selection. Mind boggling still.

He is a good player for sure and no he doesn't deserve to be dropped after a bad series but I was making the point about his age. Selectors get twitchy with players of that age, so a bad series can wrongly do them in.

The Kapil v Ashwin comparison at end of last test was interesting. Not completely inappropriate given Kapil wasn't a terrific batsman really. Ashwin is not a specialist by any means though, lets be clear about that. He does a job as a lower order player and it's great we have that option. I would prefer Ashwin to the hit and miss Kapil as a batsman btw for tests at least, ftr.
Utter bullshit. Ashwin isn't close to Kapil as a test batsman until he does something significant against a genuinely good team.

Kapil is way overrated as a batsman. Kapil used to slog a fair bit even in tests. He was not reliable at all.

Utterly perfect first pole for Joseph, the second one decent too. Didn't think they'd pick him this early but happy to be wrong. Nothing lifts a team more than a hot pace prospect steaming in, no respect for reputations.

With Amir back, it's Ambrose/Wasim all over again!

Saha making runs is a huge positive for us. He doesn't have a conventional style but is getting the job done.

Any particular reason why they are going so slow? Haven't been able to watch.
There is a bit of bounce in the wicket though nothing extra ordinary. Probably just didn't want to take lot of risks after the flurry of wickets. I like it.

I realize WI bowling is hardly world-class, but is there any particular reason why Ashwin could not make big runs vs other teams? Does he have a spin/swing/fast specific weakness?

He isn't a specialist. So against quality bowling he is shown up a bit more. I wouldn't say he has more of a weakness against either pace or spin though compared to the other. Has his game worked out for the faster bowlers too in his own style. The best part of his batting is that he applies himself and puts a price on his wicket while also trying to make runs where the opportunities arise. Has enough of a defensive game with attacking strokes to work both in tandem.
