Following story makes it worth a bump.

Little DK Lillee anecdote.

Way back in 1991 I was 19 years old. There was a meatmarket of a pub in the posh suburb of Brighton, in Melbourne, Australia called "Jake's". Pretty feral place - dark corners, pool tables, University crowd, sawdust on the floor (presumably to soak up the vomit).

Anyway, it was our regular Saturday night.

One time I was waiting my turn at the bar and this old bloke (compared with most everyone else there) was in front of me with a drink card. He turns around and I'm greeted by DK's mustache and white shirt (2 buttons undone, hairy chest). There was no doubt who it was and I was completely starstruck.

An hour later I am dominating on one of the pool tables, doubles where you attach yourself to the hottest (and drunkest) girl you can find and play as double's partners. I'm sure I'm a good thing with a tall brunette (of questionable age) and DK wanders (with a couple babes in tow) and has a word to the poolmaster.

He jumps the queue and introduces himself to me and my pool-but-hopefully-shag partner as our next opponent. Proceeds to beat us by six balls and offers to buy my woulda-shoulda-coulda partner a drink.

I didn't see her for the remainder of the night until she and (and I am not exaggerating) three other nubile young "women" tumble into a taxi with DK while I'm consoling myself with a kebab (extra meat, extra chilli).

The scariest thing is that I am 99.94% sure that none of these girls even knew who he was.

So, based on my humble opinion, Lillee is deadlier than Steyn until proven otherwise.

Looking back, happy to have my lunch cut by the great man. He's a ****ing legend.

PS: I never saw him bowl at his best so cannot compare with Steyn (who is a superstar and the best I've seen since Ambrose/Akram in terms of scaring batters out).

Running off with three girls is just not fair. Share the riches, mate.

Lillee's youtube highlight reel is unimpressive. The first video that turns up is his girlish kick of Miandad. Almost a poke really. Not impressed.

In terms of theatre and backing it up with ability - these two are up there with the best. Donald was too. Think Garth Le Roux would have been as well.

I never saw Lillee but the highlights are enough to show me he was menacing and the thing is, he could be, with faster wickets, lack of helmets for a part of his career and then flimsy helmets in the years that followed.

In the age of modern helmets, I've only seen 2 bowlers, possibly 3, with truly menacing bouncers. I would not include Steyn in that list. Plus, for over half a decade, Steyn has not managed the type of pace Akhtar, Akram, Waqar and Lee could employ. So, from a physical stand point, I feel Steyn isn't as deadly as Lillee or many of the other fast bowlers but he is just as skilled.

As injuries and protection from the ODI game has become a part of his career, I feel he has grown smarter. He has learned to employ the tricks of the trade that many fast bowlers eventually learn if they are to survive.

So, not exactly deadly but smart.

However you define deadly, someone with a strike rate of 40 is it.

Steyn is the best ever IMO. He has performed in challenging conditions, never used excuses to avoid playing on wickets that dont assist pacers like Lillee.

I don't think I've contributed to this post but IMO Steyn is certainly as deadly as Lillee, as a matter of fact he is deadlier. The top ten or so are pretty close but my top 5 are :MM/McGrath/Hadlee/Imran/Steyn....the rest. The above is in no particular order fwiw

Steyn can still crank it, made Warner and co hop as much as the bloke a decade younger the other night.
