Not sure what's more predictable, Scaly whining about Milner or the sun rising in the East.

TBF I completely agree. Don't get why Milner is even near the team. He's over the hill, but was so average to begin with that it's kind of hard to spot.

Nah to hell with it. So many reasons why it's worth mentioning again and again and again
Why? We get it, players lower down the leagues can be very talented and good enough for the top. We got it when Smalling went from Maidstone to Fulham to Utd, when Rickie Lambert scored, when Ian Wright and Stuart Pearce made International careers after non league football. Its not a new nor original narrative, to be reminded of it every time he touches the ball is just annoying now. Its not like they didn't tell us all about it on Saturday after all....

Weird stuff going on with Götze at the moment. German press say he wants to go back to Dortmund, English press insisting he wants a move to Liverpool.

Ian Wright and Stuart Pearce were years ago and Vardy's climb has been more dramatic than the other two.

Seriously, the football in the conference is so so so so bad that the thought of somebody playing in it not when they've just started out, but when they were doing so in their mid-20s, and suddenly rising to the Prem is incredible enough. To do so while breaking records, firing their side to a potential title, and scoring against Germany and Holland, it's on another level.

I'm not saying it needs mentioning every time he touches the ball. But this is a player who could be key for us in the next Euros, when we were getting ready for the last ones he had yet to play in a fully professional competition. He's an inspiration to all the obvious people for all the obvious reasons. It's not a narrative, it's the plain as day fact of the matter.

They used to rattle on about Les Ferdinand playing for Hayes all the time as well tbf.

Andre Gray could be the next one to do it. Released as a teenager by Shrewsbury, went to Hinckley then Luton in non league before Brentford signed him and the rest has been goals galore. Has a good season in Premier League and he probably will get a chance next season given how most of our strikers are crocks.

True.

That being said, quite a few of them did themselves no favours at all last night. Barkley was virtually anonymous. Stones' mess-up that led to the penalty seems to have been forgotten by some pundits; no wonder he can't get in his club team at present. Rose was lucky not to give away a penalty at the start of the game with a ridiculous challenge from behind, and he can't have any serious complaints about the one that was given if he's going to wave his arms about like that. Sturridge was so-so throughout, and Walcott was barely involved for the last 20 minutes or so, after not making the most of a couple of decent chances. Lallana did some pretty things, but again blazed over when presented with a decent shooting opportunity.

Oddly, the players who did anything for their reputations were Walker and Smalling, which I wouldn't have forecast a few months ago. And the Leicester boys, of course. The goalie was fine apart from when trying to play as a libero.

Why wouldn't you have forecast that? Walker and Smalling have both had excellent seasons.

Stones just isn't a CB at this stage. I don't mind that he occasionally loses the ball trying to play out, on balance it's probably worth it. But his defensive game is just so so bad. He obviously doesn't have the Terry-esque last-ditch drama thing going on, but he doesn't read the game well or press tight to the striker either. He's hopeless at both traditional and non-traditional defending.

Re Walker and Smalling, hence my 'a few months ago' comment. I was trying to suggest that they've improved.

Actually, that's only half true. I knew that Smalling was much better nowadays and I'm quite relaxed about the prospect of him playing in the euros.
tbh Walker's progress had slipped through my radar somewhat.

He's up against Cahill, who's ****ing terrible. His positioning for Gomez's goal on Saturday was shambolic.
Cahill is fine. It's weird that you have that opinion. He's been around for so long that I thought everyone now agreed that he was nothing more or less than a fairly solid defender.

That Gomez goal happened because Khedira wasn't closed down and picked out a beautiful pass to a striker who lives for that type of goal. Wouldn't blame Cahill for it at all.

Granit Xhaka's move to Arsenal is 'virtually done'. £35m transfer fee. Wages of £120k per week. [Bild] #afc

Hmmmmmmm

Haha Bild is just a rag. Weird how people take other countries' gutter press as actual sources when we all know to ignore our own.

I'd say Xhaka to Arsenal probably will happen though.

The report doesn't really make me that much more confident of signing him because the prices reported seem a bit high. He's the best option we could get for the position though, have wanted him for over a year.
