Well it's sort of the opposite of 13/14 in that we did well in most of the big games but blew it with rubbish results against Swansea, Southampton, West Brom, Norwich, Chelsea etc. And then you've got the fact that Arsenal are basically better at parking the bus than they are at taking the initiative and chasing the game in possession, which you would've got pretty long odds on being the case five years ago.

Edit: Even in the transfer market the mistakes are different. If only Wenger had invested as much time trying to get a small technical midfielder as he did getting an experienced goalkeeper!
I saw Jonathan Wilson was arguing that this just supports the idea that the problem has always been a mental one. Like what I said before about how even if Almunia had been replaced, maybe any improvements would still just end with an Eboue-Lucas moment anyway.

Does it really make sense to focus on the lack of a shuttling midfielder? Sure it would help, but Arsenal still have a squad that's way, way better than should be necessary to win the league this season. Maybe it is just a mentality thing after all.

Could be mental. The key players are completely different though and it's not like they've not won things before. Cech, Flamini, Özil, Alexis, Giroud have basically been the spine of the team for significant periods and they've all won league titles before, so it must just be Wenger. I'm still inclined to think this season is more of an exception than most think though. There's a reason Arsenal hadn't been title favourites with the bookies at any point from the 2008-2015 seasons, as much as people like to try and argue that a title in that period was an inevitability that just didn't happen for random reasons.

Think the bigger issue is that Wenger doesn't really teach positional play like most possession oriented sides do. It means the players who do play have to be very good technically and tactically since they're basically left to their own devices. Think it shows how good Fabregas was when you consider Arsenal haven't been as good to watch since he left.

Yeah I think you have to look at Wenger's tactical deficiencies for sure too. I've never really rated him in that department. It's really time he moved upstairs. Would make such a great DoF.

Aww nightmare. Even I find it hard to watch. Up there with Bendtner blocking that Arsenal goal in the CL quarter final.
