New Zealand doom and gloom thread

Disagree he has shots all round the wicket at this level. He looked the easiest to plan for and shut down.
The shots he has control over ( the leg clip to the pacers , the cut to the spinners) they would plug with 2 fielders. Then feed the area he has no control over ( his off and cover drives).

Seriously don't think he has any placement skills with his offside play. His drives are all the same shot regardless of the vagaries of how far outside off the line is. Whether the shot then sends the ball through straight, mid off or cover seems to be down to how much slice he gets on it or not.
Don't get me wrong, he's not perfect and he definitely needs to work on his off side shots in front of the wicket. Just that I don't think he's a naturally stodgy batsman.

Might be a controversial opinion, but NZ may well be better without Baz.
Very, very difficult to say. We'll miss his batting. Hard. And it's not his fault that Southee and Boult dropped their bundle so badly in this series. But equally there's no reason that Southee and Boult won't recover their past form in the future, and with a more calm captain in place the likelihood of NZ conceding 4rpo will probably decline dramatically.

I'm not sure why you'd say Latham looks like he's been told to bat over aggressively - if anything it's the opposite. He's got his leaving down but totally forgets how to score runs once the covers get plugged up and bowlers don't bowl rubbish on his legs

I'm not saying that. Skyliner is and I'm saying I disagree with him.

I think certain individuals will start performing better, but it won't have the exact same attitude and whether or not that will translate into more or less wins remains to be seen.

Also if Craig was to play more as a specialist bat he needs some time to tighten up his game. Remember when we tried it with James Franklin? Boy that turned out well didn't it.

I don't think that will happen, and I don't see why it would ever need to happen.

That's why Mitchell Santner exists.

Mark Craig needs to bowl and bowl and bowl until his consistency is test standard. Because there is potential there.

Indeed and I'm starting to think he won't get that consistency continuing to be bowled at Test level. Some A tours and a county contract would be ideal. Swann came back gold after a spell out of the side. But there';s been continued calls of "he's rubbish but he can bat, so make him bat." Overrating his ability imo.

Yeah, but those calls are usually from people who are totally unaware that cricket exists in NZ outside of their television screens. And so don't know that their are another 30 to 50 odd better batsmen out there than Mark Craig.

True, but there's been a few on this forum too (not that that makes your observation invalid). It's such an incredibly naive viewpoint. He makes runs when he's not expected to and he performs well omg he must be better than the guy in the top order who he outscored, replace him with Craig!

1) Guptil - any delivery will do - no plan necessary
2) Latham - Plan equals = in the channel since he is still developing his leaving game. If he gets to 40 bring on Lyon.
3) Kane - yes definitely a plan and an intricate one which would take me a while to describe if I was to come close to doing it justice.
4) Nicholls - doesn't warrant a plan plus he was new to them.
5) Brendon - They got him out with a back up plan in the first inning. Everything in at leg stump and at his hip. Without that plan he was on for 250.
6) Corey - He is not an LBW candidate don't waste your time with balls at the stumps. Be patient and let him self implode.
7) BJ Watling - 6/7th stump line by memory. They went wider than normal iirc
So basically their plans were

1) No plan
2) Default bowling plan to any batsman ever
3) An extremely complicated plan
4) No plan
5) Leg stump line at hips
6) No plan
7) Wide of off

Fascinating

Wait, who on this forum thinks Craig is a better bat than the top order?

Speaking of our lower order and top order batsmen.... here's a remarkable positive lighthearted interview/exchange between Guptill & Boult from the NZ cricket awards. Interesting that neither player made any reference to the disappointing finish to the season after an amazing first half.

In fact Guptill asked Boult a question about his great bowling partnership with Southee, and I kind of expected Boult to add the caveat that things perhaps their form wasn't so great in recent times vs. Australia, but no... it was all positive stuff.

Well the award was for 2015 so it only included a small portion of this summer right?
Is for first class performances since the previous award, normally presented in Mar-Apr. IIRC hasn't gone to a non-test player for some time. This season's award included test series in Eng, in Aus and 2 home series.

Boult had the best test record, 37 wickets @ 34. Southee 30 @ 38. Craig 16 @ 57. Wagner 16 @ 25 from only 3 tests of the 9 played.
