I just looked at that clip - I think McCullum made his ground at the the other end so it should have been Richardson who was out.

I love Crowd Goes Wild. Goodbye McCullum even made me a bit teary. Poor old Smithy looks decidedly out of his comfort zone though.

My combined team of the series sees all four openers batting in the top four. Some may say they were advantaged in getting the new ball and the PP, but they were miles ahead of the others.

Split between Bracewell & Hazelwood as 3rd seamer. Bracewell only played the one game but an EWR of 2.5 is almost freakish in this day & age. He's been a revelation with the ball since that away series in SA.

The other option is replacing that spot with Anderson (for his bowling) and batting him at 7 above Wade.

If we could cheat then McCullum takes the gloves and Anderson bats 7 for the extra bowling option.

Wade was the lesser of the evils when it comes to the keepers in that series.

More likely to be a series in the late 80/90s as there weren't many hundreds scored in those early days.

You could pick Nicholls as keeper then push Marsh and Santner down one. He kept for NZ A v SL A and is Ronchi's backup (hopefully starts instead) for World T20. His innings in game 1 was very important

Or runs in general though. I'd be surprised if many 3 match series from the 80/90s had a higher run aggregate that this one, even though the bowling dominated this series.

Too radical though for a side which makes personnel changes reluctantly.

Great win! Three positives for me from this series were Doug Bracewell, the spinners, and Adam Milne.

Doug Bracewell really knows how to tie an end up and build pressure. Would have him involved in the LO stuff a lot more often. He did a similar sort of job against South Africa on the African tour last year and did well while picking up key wickets.

The spinners were great as well. Mitch Santner was in the runs in pressure situations and provided a good recovery/rearguard. Also took 5 wickets in two matches as well. 3 of them (2nd odi) were crucial in bringing us back in the game. Ish Sodhi was rightfully awarded MOM for a brilliant spell alongside Dougeh. Picked up key wickets that turned the game around in the span of three deliveries. Encouraging signs from the spinners ahead of the T20 WC.

Adam Milne might still not be heavily amongst the wickets like a strike bowler, but he's getting there. Its a very slow progress, but its there. Give him time and he'll start getting them once he gets his variations and learns some swing/seam movement. The most notable thing I've seen from him is his confidence and development in the use of the slower ball...he's picked up good wickets while being under the pump from that ball. Encouraged by his fitness and maintenance of high energy/intensity/aggression as well. Looks like he's finally made it through a season without a injury blow. Good on NZC for resting him at the right times and managing him well for the games required. Also, the short ball/bodyline bouncer stuff to rough up a confident John Hastings was good stuff. Now that's some vintage fast bowling aggression.

Brownlie had a good start to the FC season, one 50 and one 100 for NZ A against SL A, then injured during 20 over comp. Had a bad start to Ford Trophy 50 over matches but finished with 55, 107*,44 and 67. Two low scores on his return to FC cricket. So useful, but not enough to push him ahead of Nicholls. Similar story for Young, useful season but not knocking the door down.

Rutherford good runs in Ford Trophy batting at #4, 332 runs avge 47, and a good double of 70 + 36 in recent FC game vs Wgtn. But repeated test failures means chance of a recall is slim unless it's to fill a short term gap due to injury.

With hindsight, Brownlie's move to opener didn't help his NZ career. Latham was always going to have one spot, and Guptill's great LO form and moderate test form means he'll have the test spot for at least another season.

Yeah fully agree on Milne. Gets some flack for his stats, but you really have to be watching those passages of play to appreciate what he brings to the attack. Needs to keep learning new tricks; as you said it's slow progress, but he does have age on his side.
