South African Domestic Season 2015/16

Isnt duane pretorius a bit on the slow side, so might be innefective at international level, as far as allrounders go im keeping my eye on andile phehlukwayo. (he could be our stokes)

Duane seems to get wickets though. Pace alone isn't what makes a good bowler IMO. I feel he's first class average of 42 is very good for a number 7/6 bat. But as an out and out test allrounder he is probably not quite there however I think his bowling is good enough for tests.

The first class batting average is inflated though as most of his first class before this season came for north west in the amateur division, for some unknown reason that division also has first class status in SA. I have liked what I have seen from him but need to see how he goes in a second season in franchise cricket first.

I like phehlukwayo and also savage from the dolphins as having real potential as well.

None are ready for test cricket thought.

It does appear that he is injured not quite the manner implied... he also might just want a break after everything he has been through.

Has anybody seen the young batsmen Zubayr Hamza bat? Is he as good as believed or has he got a lot more work to do?
Plays through the off-side well and is a good timer. Has an appetite for going big when in which is odd considering he never scored a schoolboy hundred yet at senior level it is another story. He was meant to get his Cobras debut last week but fell ill.

There is another youngster, Jason Smith, from the Cobras who was part of the u19 world cup winning squad and he did debut in the 4-day stuff and is set to debut in the Momentum 1-day cup tomorrow.

Must have improved quite a bit from when I last saw him and they say his bowling has come on a bit to make him an all-rounder candidate.

You just watch him and you say T20 at best. Also has serious knee injury issues and is out at the moment with it.

Almost similar to a Wiese. Respectable first class cricketers who worked hard at amateur level first.

How do you differentiate between the quality of wickets a bowler takes ?? Hardus came in to the test side form 20 wickets in 2 matches and was only able to get 1 or 2 wickets in the match against Eng.

How do you guage stuff like that ?

I suppose I just watch them domestically and see if they technically sound. I ask myself, can they adapt when questions are asked.

Take Hardus Viljoen. I didn't think he would succeed.

20 wickets is a lot of wickets so I don't think there is any point in looking at batsman v tail-enders there.

His action is not repeatable and has no discipline in his lines particularly. I've seen him bowl absolute hogwash and get hit domestically but get wickets due to his pace as when he gets it right ; domestic batsman do struggle. Another ball game all together at international level where those bad balls will go for 4 90% of the time and pressure is constantly released. I then look at a bit of stats & it was quite clear that Hardus Viljoen wasn't able to step up for SA 'A'. The average wasn't one just off being ready, it was in the 50's and he isn't exactly 20,21,22.

de Lange had more going for him with his action as it looks more repeatable but the injuries have got to him. I think his lengths are too bad to play in the whites for SA but I think we can use him in T20 as he has more direction and his pure pace with his yorker and short ball can come off there.

SA 'A' one-day team to take on England

Dean Elgar (c)
Reeza Hendricks
Theunis de Bruyn
Khaya Zondo
Qaasim Adams
Dane Vilas (wk)
David Wiese
Wayne Parnell
Andile Phehulwayo
Aaron Phangiso
Hardus Viljoen

Viljoen over de Lange is a surprise. With injuries to the quicks this is basically a shoot-out for promotion to Proteas.
Phangiso still ? Disgusting.

Cobras : Dane Paterson, 'Beuran Hendricks', Lizaad Williams, Tshepo Moreki, Brandon Glover*
Dolphins: Daryn Dupavillon
Knights : Duanne Olivier, Corne Dry
Lions: Carmi Le Roux, Keith Dudgeon
Titans : Lungi Ngidi

* Absolutely ripping it up in the Varsity tournament when he should be in Bangladesh with the SA u19s. Pace, bounce, accuracy but pity he has left the Lions union to go to Maties in Stellenbosch as it will be tougher to get a chance at the Cobras.

Geoblocking is so annoying. Is it worth firing up the VPN to watch?
Eh, not really. A couple of clean-bowleds by Glover but Tuks were generally blown over by Maties.

Very round arm action, a bit of nip, potential for some swing as well. But as I say, pretty hard to gauge his ability when Tuks get bowled out for 80-odd in a T20.

Tuks normally has a power side though. Probably the best varsity side in SA, and good feeder for the Titans. Isn't Kruger van Wyk coming back to SA to do something at Tuks?

Perhaps. But you have to agree that some of those dismissals were horrendous. Glover only got like 3 or 4 of the wickets, it was carnage out there for all of the bowlers, really.

He definitely looks a good talent but I'd have to see more than that match to say just how good.

Why you anti-Phangiso? Cause he's rubbish or cause of that drinking incident?

Haven't watched it, but I will.

This Varsity Sports initiative is, in general, quite good though I think.

Yeah, seems awesome. Unfortunately my university doesn't have a team in it, otherwise I'd have considered trying to earn a spot.
