To my mind if you need to bowl a 6th bowler you are losing the game, probably because one of your main bowlers got tonked.

I'd never bowl a non-specialist bowler, not even for one over, if I had an ATG team to choose from.
I very clearly you remember advocating Martin Crowe as NZ's fifth bowler though.

Think that was CaptainGrumpy. I never had Crowe as a 5th bowler in any team I came up with.

My NZ ATG ODI team is

1. Guptill
2. Turner
3. KW
4. Crowe
5. Taylor
6. Anderson (5)
7. McCullum
8. Lance Cairns (4)
9. Hadlee (3)
10. Bond (2)
11. Pringle (1)

Why doesn't anyone seem to remember how good Lara was as an opener in ODIs?

Tendulkar
Lara
Viv
Kohli
Dhoni
Bevan
Flintoff
Pollock
Warne
Akram
Mcgrath

Res: Murali

Would be my choice. Liable to change depending on my mood but not drastically.

Astounding that Greenidge is not even given a mention for the opening slot..45+ average in ODI and can be as explosive as Viv if need be..ooph that leg side pickup shot..i can watch it all day..

Yeah agreed. Wanted to mention him earlier but gave it a pass. Is almost universally (outside of CW) rated lower to Desmond Haynes somehow in ODIs.

I was the biggest advocate in CW of opening with Lara and Tendulkar. I think I still prefer that option - at least till we see more of Hashim Amla.

gilchrist was the scariest odi batsman of my childhood. i dont give a **** what his average looks like now, it was 2002. no one sniffed at an average of 35 then and he scored so ****ing fast and when he went big...

iirc it was pretty uncommon for batsmen to even average 40 in odis back then, especially when there were plenty of people doing that in tests. tendulkar, bevan and ponting had big averages. not many others did. nick knight and trescothick? zulu?

since this isn't experimental like your strike rate team im going to rip into it. you picked the wrong cairns and forgot glasses man.

Would prefer some one else to open rather than Lara. Lara opened in 50 or so games but others did it for almost if not all of their careers with a fair degree of success.

Stephen Fleming as well

If you had to pick 2 out of Ponting, Kohli and Gilly, who would you pick?
Ponting and Gilly. Kohli has been terrific in ODI cricket but Ponting won his team the world cup and was the best batsman of the 2000s - the entire decade. Maybe after a few more years of brilliance from Kohli I'll put him higher, but not now. Also depends on which role I am selecting them for. If it's chasing, Kohli's weightage increases obviously.

England played less odis compared to others but Flintoff player even lower as he retired early. 130 or so ODIs in his era seems far less. Not sure if it means he shouldn't be considered for an all time odi xi but it certainly goes against him when compared to other players. If he had played more, he would be a walk in into the ODI XI probably

He's a strange one, I think his statistics flatter him a bit in ODIs and don't do justice to his quality in Tests. When I think of Flintoff's career standout moments, they all come in Tests. He had a bit of a golden run around 2004 in ODIs though, especially with the bat IIRC. As a bowler, he was always quality and very hard to get away.
Flintoff between 2006 and 2009ish was the best death bowler going round by an absolutely enormous margin.

I agree with Cribbage on his batting. His best position was at 5 (averaged 40 with a SR close to 90 IIRC) and his 3 tons were all scored from 5 where England were 3/fa before 20 overs.

He's the greatest ODI all rounder IMO (only Shane Watson runs him remotely close) but he's actually surprisingly difficult to fit into an all time XI.

It has a bit of an eye to the future with Anderson at 6. Am convinced he will be an ATG.

Vettori could be a straight swap for Lance Cairns. The problem for me is that Vettori was not more dangerous with the ball and Lance Cairns has considerable hitting value at 8.

Of course this leaves my team without a spinner. Don't think a spinner is 100% necessary though.
