Luke Wright being called a pinch hitter is self evidently stupid. He averages 40 in first class cricket and bats in the top 5. Anyone who thinks he is a pinch hitter is absolutely worthless debating as they lack enough knowledge of the subject matter to keep up.

A better example would be David Willey who opens for his domestic T20/List A side and could more accurately be called closer to a pinch hitter. It isn't a tactic used in T20, because as most astute observers of the game realise (including basically every professional team and all international teams) it is a waste to put a slogger up the order in the powerplay, as these overs need to be used by your best players. Indeed in T20 getting your best players in to maximise the deliveries they face is what the good teams do.
omg you just don't listen

I didn't say Luke Wright was a definitively a "pinch-hitter". I said it was arguable. There's no Webster's dictionary definition of a pinch-hitter ffs, and if there was he would probably fit a few criteria.

If you're contention is that **** players shouldn't be used as pinch hitters then no ****, I don't think most people would argue with you. Using Sean Abbott as a pinch hitter was probably a **** move because he's a **** batsman and has been for a while.

tbh though it could have come off and any risk-benefit analysis would not be as one-sided as you think

**** me, what does Watto need to do to not be blamed for everything?
About a year ago, the Royal Brotherhood for Matters of Unfortunate Responsibilites (RBMUR) decided that Shane Watson will be blamed for anything that goes wrong untill he retires from all cricket. There's no way to get around it.

Last summer's Ashes, Watson twice spilled a review on his own LBW decision. Nobody will argue he doesn't have a combined LBW & review problem. Yet, the fact one of the reviews was two balls before replenishment tof reviews, and the other was in a situation where he was the last recognised batsman, didn't stop newspapers, forum posters, and TV commentators to simply bring forward the naked fact that Watson AGAIN spilled a review on LBW.

Just like the RBMUR likes to see it!

It isn't arguable. You'd have to be a complete moron to think it is. Pinch hitters rarely work. Pick batsmen and let them bat, that is what all the good sides do.

When I think of pinch hitting in cricket, I always think back to Craig McDermott in a handful of ODIs. They chucked him in at 3, 4 or 5 and I don't recall it EVER coming off. Hated the idea ever since...
they tried to do it with mitchell johnson in an ODI by chucking him in at 3. but he ****ed it up by making a well compiled, solid fifty

Did the commbox really just attribute the ODI victory last night to the BBL?

Advertise harder lads.

what'd he say? on mute
Mel Jones asked him about the banter out in the middle with West and he replied "who? oh the left armer? yeah he hasn't bowled all that well. see how he goes facing some of our quicks". was just weird, if it was meant to be cheeky banter it failed miserably
