Is Chris Gayle some sort of perverted misogynist or can everyone just settle down?

That's a good point.

I would say that I'm a feminist in that I believe men and women should be treated equally and have the same opportunities etc. But I'm not a RAAAAWWWRRR THE PATRIARCHY feminist. I doubt many people are though to be fair, and very few men.

To me as an outsider looking in, the Australian press have come out of this as badly as Chris Gayle. Who does Ian Chapell work for? Channel 9. Who owns channel 9? Fairfax media. Who is about to sue Fairfax media? Chris Gayle.

Gayle has it in him to be a bit of an idiot. On this occasion he has been a complete tool, just as he has a few times before. I feel for the female reporter who had to put up with his antics. He has been fined, people like Chris Rodgers have had their long awaited chance to stick the boot in. But this is now beyond a joke and reading the comments under most of these articles the Australian public thinks the same.

They need to be very careful. There's a lot of rumbling around the Caribbean at the disproportionate reaction to this in Australia. The racism card has been played quite frequently. I'm not going to go there personally but if they carry on like this public opinion will be against them. Hopefully Gayle shows a bit of brainpower and just keeps himself to himself over the next few weeks, scores some runs and lets Fairfax media continue to embarrass themselves. He does need to think about his conduct in interviews though, there was always a chance something like this could happen. He needs better media advice.

You've injected your own MRA subtext into that quote. My point is that some feminists are opposed to modelling, pornography and prostitution in any capacity. They equate aesthetics with objectification, and hence using any subjective attractiveness to obtain an advantage is by extension self-subjugation as a proud woman.

Also what the **** is that abomination written by Knox? I'm flummoxed at what it actually is saying and why it exists.

IMO its a good thing that Gayle is suing Fairfax for defamation.

It means Gayle thinks that article damages his reputation and his personal brand.

Which means Gayle presumably knows that allegedly exposing himself to a woman in a dressing room is completely wrong.

And plenty of feminists I know who have no problem with either in theory either, and look askance on anyone trying to denigrate (wittingly or otherwise) the women working in said industries. It's no hivemind.

I really don't get it. Is he trying to be funny? Is it some weird attempt at irony? Does he actually believe Gayle only understands messages written in a dodgy Jamaican accent? Does he genuinely think that 'dialect' reflects actual Jamaican culture? Does he think his readership is that base that they literally cannot conceptualise Chris Gayle as anything but a stereotype? Is he really, really high right now?

Yeah, its a topic with legitimate opinions held by feminists on either side on the issue. Definitely no hivemind, which is why I found it kinda weird that Captain_Cook brought it up there.

If you can actually drag yourself through it, or do what I did and skip to the end after facepalming at the opening couple of paragraphs, I think his point is that cartoonish prejudice isn't funny, and if Gayle's offended by the first 80% of the article, he should understand how Mel felt about what he did. Which isn't a terrible point, but it's a not-terrible point made absolutely awfully.

I mean seriously, talk about burying the lead. You just don't publish that ****. Absolutely awful article regardless of the point it was trying to make.

He is basically saying "Yeah, Gayle, I know this is offensive. It doesn't feel good, right? Maybe we should consider other people's feelings before opening our mouths. And because your forefathers were taken slaves, you should be especially wary of judging people for their physical qualities only."

What a ****ish way to do it.
