South African Domestic Season 2015/16

Marius

International Debutant
You got to add Heino Kuhn in the opening debate now. The competition is hotting up. Outside of the current 4 with the Proteas and SA 'A' guys like Puttick, White, Ackermann (not really an opener but looks like he will open for the Warriors in the current game), D.van Wyk, Khan, Kuhn & Markram will be saying they can get some test caps here.
If Van Zyl or Elgar fail in these first two Tests I reckon they could give someone like Cook a go.

Given the world t20 is in India there is no way I would back Levi to score more runs then the likes of QDK or AB and those 2 will open imho. Their records in India speak for themselves and both can play spin. Also no question marks about their fitness or fielding. There are better options then levi around.
It is a mute point anyway as he is Kolpark and playing in the Master Series.

But there will be injuries and form peaks and troughs and it would be stupid to not consider him if available.

For example the joke that is Cameron Delport got the SA 'A' call-up in the winter.

Cook and Reeza Hendricks get their opportunity to impress starting Sunday. Heino Kuhn probably reminded selectors of what he is about. Always averaged over 40 and up there for FC hundreds too.

A clear indication of who they see as having potential for down the line as openers is David White and Aiden Markram who opened for the SA Academy in Sri Lanka.

What I am pleased about is that we seeing new younger names coming forward. Like the two guys above, Colin Ackermann, Devon Conway, Theunis de Bruyn, Diego Rosier, Zubayr Hamza etc

Possible, could also try Rilee Rossouw as an opener before that.
Wouldn't do that at all. Rilee needs some freedom to play his natural game and then again he still has a lot to prove if he can do that at test level. At 3 or 4 when he gets his debut hopefully.

Clyde Fortuin with a backs to the wall 72 for the Warriors.

Good partnership between Miller (62) and Savage (44) as well for the Dolphins to keep in the game.

Having said that none of those batting talents above have scored hundreds or runs regularly at franchise level since they were 19-20-21 like van Zyl, Duminy, Amla, R.Hendricks, Rossouw, Miller, Elgar, Cook, Kuhn, AB & de Kock. The only current one's who were late bloomers are Faf and Behardien & Bavuma.

Suppose a lot of them have had to be patient for their chance but you want to see these young batsmen dominate and only Theunis de Bruyn has shown he can do so. The others are good players but they need to start scoring hundreds regularly. Suppose Markram and Hamza haven't been exposed to franchise cricket.

If I look at the u19 squad being announced tomorrow I can't say there are too many young batsman coming through from there. I would say our best two are all-rounders in Galiem and Mulder.

I'm convinced that outside of the current Proteas and SA 'A' line-up it has to be Pillans, Savage, Phehlukwayo, Dupavillon (needs to be playing franchise cricket though !) & Ngidi that are groomed as the next batch of seamers and seamer-all-rounders.

I would say Dala but I think he is very much in the Hardus Viljoen boat for me in that they have pace but with their actions being non-repeatable they will always have issues with their direction against international quality batsman. With Beuran Hendricks, he has suffered with injuries but I am also struggling to see him trouble top quality players.

There is talk that Hardus Viljoen was bowling seriously quickly at the Wanderers yesterday. He was touching 150 kph in the 1-DAY cup and Ram Slam at times. He also bowled 12.4 overs unchanged from the one end after tea.

I'm still not convinced but that is a monumental effort that needs respect as he got 6-113 to take his team home.

Headline on Super Sport - Viljoen : Beware Speed Kills.

Stats aren't everything but they do add to the overall picture. So here is an interesting group of franchise stats. There are clear examples of some players that will succeed at the lower level but can't step up and then there is player with talent and potential that you pick and they can fulfill that on the international stage without ever being absolutely dominant at franchise level. So as ever, you take stats into account and they do count for a bit and then from watching a player you can better judgement.

Take de Kock & de Bruyn for example, they have 1 and 0 franchise hundreds respectively but both have 2 FC hundreds for SA 'A'. Because obviously no SA 'A' stats or county stats are in below.

Titans v Cobras

Omphile Ramela will take charge of the Cape Cobras in his new role as captain of their Sunfoil Series side when they travel to Sahara Willowmoore Park to face an in-form The Unlimited Titans on Sunday.

Ramela was handed the job at the start of the season but missed the Cobras’ innings defeat to the Knights last week because he was on duty with South Africa A.

Now he has the task of lifting a franchise that have not appeared to be quite themselves this season, proving inconsistent and lacking their usual swagger in the limited overs formats and then getting beaten heavily by the Knights at the start of the four-day competition.

“It’s part of us identifying a leadership group within our squad, and also with some experience around him I think he’ll grow into the role,” coach, Paul Adams, said of the decision to appoint Ramela. “He’s come a long way within our squad and shown some good qualities as a leader.”

After fielding four Proteas players last weekend, the Cobras will slot back into a more settled side that can expect to do duty for the majority of the competition.

Justin Ontong, Dane Vilas and Robin Peterson all return along with Ramela, while Rory Kleinveldt is also back from his latest injury to boost the fast bowling stocks.

The only real surprise on the team sheet is Simon Khomari, with the former South Africa Under-19 player in line for a franchise debut.

“He gives us an option as an opening batsman - he’s been doing quite well for Boland, and he played with us in our pre-season games and really impressed us,” said Adams. “So he’s one of the young players within our semi-pro setup that we’re looking to grow as cricketers.”

Meanwhile, the Titans have an almighty selection headache, with South Africa A players Quinton de Kock, Chris Morris and Marchant de Lange all coming back into a winning side, and left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi called up after he took 9 for 87 for Easterns against Free State last weekend.

Fast bowler Eldred Hawken has already been left out of the squad despite taking five wickets on debut against the Warriors last weekend, but the selectors will face further questions over how to pick a playing XI from a strong squad of 13.

“It shows just how much depth we have at the Titans,” said captain, Henry Davids. “Last week’s win was especially handy for maintaining the high confidence levels as there was a big turnaround in the squad - a lot of guys weren’t involved in the Ram Slam campaign.”

Titans squad: Heino Kuhn, Henry Davids (capt), Theunis de Bruyn, Farhaan Behardien, Grant Mokoena, David Wiese, Mangaliso Mosehle, Rowan Richards, Ethy Mbhalati, Quinton de Kock, Chris Morris, Marchant de Lange, Tabraiz Shamsi.

Cobras squad: Omphile Ramela (capt), Andrew Puttick, Simon Khomari, Justin Ontong, Keegan Petersen, Dane Vilas, Lesiba Ngoepe, Robin Peterson, Rory Kleinveldt, Dane Paterson, Lizaad Williams, Beuran Hendricks, Tshepo Moreki.

Knights v Dolphins

Reeza Hendricks returns for the Knights & they have signed Mnyanda on loan from Warriors/SWD. Friend and Dry aren't fully fit.

Dolphins get Phehlukwayo, Maharaj, Tahir & Zondo back. Imraan Khan is struggling with an injury & Morne van Wyk should return in the new year.

KNIGHTS SQUAD
Letlotlo Sesele, Reeza Hendricks, Luthando Mnyanda, Diego Rosier, Pite van Biljon, Tumelo Bodibe, Michael Erlank, Rudi Second, Werner Coetsee, Shadley van Schalkwyk, Dillon du Preez, Duanne Olivier, Mbulelo Budaza
DOLPHINS SQUAD
Imraan Khan, Divan van Wyk, Khaya Zondo, Dave Miller, Cody Chetty, Sibs Makhanya, Daryn Smit, Calvin Savage, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj, Imran Tahir, Mathew Pillans, Daryn Dupavillon, Aya Myoli
Warrior v Lions

No official news yet but the Warriors team should be the same while the Lions lose Bavuma but get Cook back. Tsolekile may return for Nicky van den Bergh if fit.

Article by Luke Alfred about a month ago brings up the spinning talent & if SA can make a left field call like Tabraiz Shamsi for the T20 world cup.

Luke Alfred: Can South Africa trust in Tabraiz Shamsi? | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo

Can South Africa trust in Tabraiz Shamsi?

If they are serious about improving their T20 record, they could do worse than give Titans' promising chinaman bowler a look-in

Domestic cricket here in South Africa is currently dominated by the Ram Slam T20 Challenge. For many reasons, it's an interesting tournament, not least of which is the fact that South African cricket has never quite wrapped its head around the demands of the format. Gary Kirsten, the coach then, came back from the World T20 in Sri Lanka three years ago muttering about "dark collective mists" when the South Africans failed to make it past the Super Eights. We are - in T20 terms at least - still in the philosophical fog.

There are suggestions, however, that the view might be clearing. Last Friday night at Newlands, two of the top three teams in the competition, the home-based Cobras and the up-country Titans, faced off, with Titans sneaking home by nine runs to go to the top. Representing the respective franchises were two players who could yet have profound roles to play in the next World T20 in India in March and April - Cobras' Richard Levi and Titans' Tabraiz Shamsi. Levi - most of us already know about him - is a blacksmith right-hander comfortable against pace and iffy against spin. Kirsten took him to Sri Lanka three years ago, where he blotted his copybook slightly by reverse-sweeping Saeed Ajmal and getting bowled. As a career move it had distinct disadvantages, although there have recently been some indications that all could be forgiven. Levi's time in the wilderness might be coming to an end.

If Levi is all grim destruction, Shamsi is all ****sure effervescence. He's a chinaman and googly bowler with almost the best economy rate in the competition, and with his variations and attitude he has the priceless ability to make even calm batsmen look flustered. He didn't take a wicket at Newlands on Friday night, his four overs going for 17, but he bamboozled poor Andrew Puttick so badly that it was almost laughable. In the final of last season's 50-over competition in February, Shamsi trapped Levi leg before to halt Cobras as they were fast disappearing over the horizon. From 180 for 1 with Levi's dismissal for 104, Cobras flapped and splashed to 285 for 8. Shamsi's breakthrough prevented them from posting in excess of 300; with Dean Elgar (100) and Albie Morkel (134 not out) to the fore, Titans won by five wickets, when a couple of weeks prior to that it was moot as to whether they would make the playoffs.

The issue with Shamsi is largely one of trust, and herein lies the rub as far as South Africa's approach to T20 matters is concerned. Sport here is largely wired to avoid defeat rather than to risk exposure in chasing victory. Chinamen and googly bowlers are high risk, in that they bowl full tosses and long hops, yet they also bowl magical deliveries conjured from nowhere. For Shamsi to even play in last season's 50-over final was a challenge to Titans' very fundamentals. Before the final, he wasn't picked for the matches against Lions and Warriors. Now his career is on the cusp of something truly special, and those around him need to keep the faith.

His growing confidence has something to do with Marlon Samuels, who played against Titans when West Indies toured South Africa last summer. Samuels took his positive impression to Eric Simons, coach of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and the franchise was brave enough to take a punt. Their faith was handsomely rewarded, with Shamsi finishing as one of the most respected bowlers in the competition. More than that, Simons said he was "engaging", with a good attitude and willingness to learn. "I think South African cricket has struggled to embrace the T20 format," says Simons. "Traditionally, spinners might be brought on once pressure has been created. Someone like Tabraiz has the control to create that pressure."

Shamsi is not the only local spinner enjoying a snappy summer. The Lions duo of Aaron Phangiso and Eddie Leie have taken 20 Ram Slam wickets between them, Phangiso at an economy rate a notch above Shamsi's. Cobras left-arm spinner George Linde has caught the eye, and Keshav Maharaj and Prenelan Subrayen have both bowled well at times for Dolphins. Subrayen has taken four wickets in an innings twice but has been suspended from the Dolphins setup for remedial work on his action. He's a big-spinning offspinner but it's not the first time that he has been called. Like Shamsi, his career is at the crossroads, although you rather feel that the chinaman bowler is heading in the opposite direction.

LIONS v WARRIORS

QAASIM ADAMS will turn out for the bizhub Highveld Lions when they host the Warriors at Bidvest Wanderers on Sunday after joining the franchise on loan for the next two Sunfoil Series games.

The Titans batsman was brought in after Alviro Petersen was ruled out with a knee problem, while the Lions have also added Yassar Cook and Nono Pongolo to their squad.

Thami Tsolekile remains sidelined by an Achilles’ issue, and so Nicky van den Bergh will keep the gloves, having impressed on his Sunfoil Series debut last weekend when he contributed a handy second-innings fifty in a victory over the Dolphins.

Stephen Cook also returns from his South Africa A duties to lead the Lions as they look to take advantage of their second straight home game at a time of the season that coach, Geoffrey Toyana, sees as crucial.

“It’s a difficult period to play these first few rounds, but we’ve had a chat and embraced it because I think this is where we won this trophy last year - in the December period,” he said.

“We beat the Cobras twice, and it was tough, but if you win those two games up front then it makes your job easier as the tournament goes on.”

The Warriors began their campaign with defeat at the Titans, but can draw confidence from how they fought their way back into the game.

After conceding a 260-run deficit in the first innings as they ‘lost’ the first two days of the game, the Warriors turned things around over the last two days when they dismissed the Titans for 171 and then made a good fist of chasing a target of 332.

“If we could have played the way we did in the second innings, with our bowling and our batting, in the first innings then we would have been really competitive,” reflected captain, Colin Ingram.

“We showed a huge amount of skill to bat so well and get a big total in the second innings. There was a hell of a lot of good stuff and hopefully this week we can hit the ground running.”

Lions squad: Stephen Cook (capt), Rassie van der Dussen, Yassar Cook, Dominic Hendricks, Shaylen Pillay, Qaasim Adams, Nicky van den Bergh, Dwaine Pretorius, Hardus Viljoen, Aaron Phangiso, Eddie Leie, Pumelela Matshikwe, Devon Conway, Nono Pongolo, Sean Jamison.

It is a real pity that Savage picked up a slight side strain & misses this Dolphins game. Needs to get a run of games now. Think the sooner we can get seamer all-rounders back in our cricket the better. Phehlukwayo with 32 today at 8. Let us see what he does with the ball.

de Lange goes from SA 'A' to not making the Titans team due to quotas. Not saying he is great FC bowler but come on !

de Kock with the only hundred of the round.

Interesting watching Morris, Paterson, Viljoen, Pillans with the ball. Supposedly next in line with Parnell, de Lange but I am not sure they have enough for test cricket. Obviously Pillans is new though and he does look like he has a bit about him. Limited overs are the hopes of quite of these because Morris let me down in PMB v England with his great franchise 4-day record.

Theunis de Bruyn also been disappointing but I suppose he was never ever dominant for SA u19. Getting another start today and was seriously woeful in India with SA 'A'.

Now is time for batsman to score big hundreds and put their hands up on our domestic scene. Only keepers de Kock and Smit did so today.

That is the positive with Mulder & Galiem with the SA u19s. They scored runs on the sub-continent in their age group. They both look very very good players.
