CW decides the greatest All-Rounder ever, 64 man knockout tournament: Voting Thread

Given this is a vote of the greatest 'All-Rounder' and that the term 'All-Rounder' hasn't been defined, I'm voting for the cricketer who had the greatest all-round impact on their team. All formats, all aspects of cricket -batting, bowling, fielding, leadership-, all of it considered.

I voted for Shakib > Botham just because I didn't want Shakib to end up with 0 votes, but Imran > Miller because of his leadership and his ODI performances.
I don't think you can count something against Miller (relatively speaking) which didn't even exist in his time.

By all accounts he would've thrived in ODIs and T20s

If it's all formats you've got to consider Miller's phenomenal batting record in fc cricket as well.

I do. And I dont hold it against him that he didn't play ODIs. But I do give credit for Imran for being a phenomenal bowler in both formats, seeing as how so many ATG bowlers tend to not be as good in ODIs as they are in Tests. On top of that, the 1992 WC fairytale victory under his leadership counts for a lot

Don't see what makes Miller better all-rounder than Imran myself. Imran is a top tier bowler so that is not in question I suppose. His batting was not merely serviceable but was mainstay for a good 40-50 tests for his team.

Went with Shakib over Botham because of the whole career thing.
Nah come off it. I spoke up for Shakib earlier, but he's been a consistently decent batsman and bowler for about 5-6 years now. Botham was, for a 5-year stretch, the best allround player there's ever been. Tailing off towards the end doesn't detract from that, it just doesn't add to it.

Untrue. Most people on CW deduct a few points from him because of his "tail off". Perhaps what most people on CW think doesn't matter now that I think of it. Carry on, as you were.

Jacques Kallis

Imran Khan

Ian Botham

Garry Sobers

Imran was the superior bowler at his peak and a definite Top 5 ATG quick, but Miller batted every where from 3 to 7 (mostly at 5) and was clearly the better batsman. Both are hugely important to cricket folklore.

Toss of a coin - Imran

How anyone can pick Greig over Kallis, or Shakib over Botham beats me. Sobers a lay down misere.

I just get the perception with Kallis that there was an element of playing for himself as much the team, and he certainly wasn't much of a personality - Greigy on the other hand was the best competitor I've ever seen - he always scrapped away, led from the front and stuck two fingers up at whatever was thrown at him - also a big enough man to eat a large slice of humble pie after his infamous utterance

........ and as his numbers prove he could definitely play a bit

It was a bit of a tongue in cheek decision, but there are a couple of understated things going for it. For one, Shakib is probably not even halfway through his career. But the main thing was my belief that you can credit much of Bangladesh's improvement over the last 2-3 years to the inspiration Shakib has provided other Bangladeshi cricketers by being legitimately world class. That's got to count for something, maybe not technically part of an 'all-rounders' skillset but whatevs.

Greig does have a big feel good factor, especially when compared to the rather dull Kallis. But honestly, 13,289 Test runs and 292 Test wickets is too immense to ignore. Also, Kallis was the spinal column of his teams batting order for a decade or more. The same can't be said of Greig despite his cameos against Lillee and Thomo.

And of course Greig was England captain when I was a teenager, and after the likes of Cowdrey, Denness and Illingworth was the first one we youngsters could identify with - he was a real hero to my generation and inspired many to take an interest in the game at a time when it wasn't being run very well

Yeah I get that :)

I admit that I wanted to vote for Greig over Kallis on the basis of him being one of my first cricketing heroes and Kallis being a boring git. But to my shame I went by the stats. I'll never recover from the shame.
