CW decides the greatest All-Rounder ever, 64 man knockout tournament: Voting Thread

I reckon the discussion around difference between cricketer and all-rounder is encapsulated in the second quarter-final here. I personally rate Imran the third greatest Test cricketer of all time, and as an overall cricketer - for all Miller's greatness - I have Imran ahead.

However, as an all-rounder - which to me at this level is combining being a genuine force with both bat and ball at the same time - I would say the reverse is true, and Miller just shades Imran.

All just one guy's opinion, obviously.

so what are some thing to consider when deciding who is the better cricketer that you wouldn't consider when deciding who is the better AR?

mental stuff? captaincy?

I'm in the greater cricketer =/= greater all-rounder camp too

Imran was a great bowler and limited batsman. A lot of his legacy as a cricketer is about inspiring/motivating others. I wouldn't say he was a great captain tactically, but neither were Lloyd or Richards.

Imran vs. Miller was a tough one, but I dont buy the idea that Imran was a lesser all-rounder or didnt perform both skills at the same time. The fact is, during Imran's bowling peak from 1980-88, he averaged 40 with the bat. And that was in the 1980s when bowling standards were quite high. He would have walked into any side in the world at no.5 or no.6.

Even if one gives Miller an edge in batting, the difference between Imran's and Miller's bowling is a lot more than their averages indicate. And of course, Imran did this while captain.

Went with Shakib over Botham because of the whole career thing.

So do we ignore his stats outside of that period? Like that he averaged 30 bowling for half his career? Miller was by far a better batsman, and a better fielder too.

Given this is a vote of the greatest 'All-Rounder' and that the term 'All-Rounder' hasn't been defined, I'm voting for the cricketer who had the greatest all-round impact on their team. All formats, all aspects of cricket -batting, bowling, fielding, leadership-, all of it considered.

I voted for Shakib > Botham just because I didn't want Shakib to end up with 0 votes, but Imran > Miller because of his leadership and his ODI performances.

Yeah Miller's bowling average tends to flatter him somehwat (from what I have heard and read) while his batting average is probably lower than what it should.

Richie followed all of Imran's career and saw enough of Miller (did they play together?) but he did choose Imran ahead of Miller in his team for the allrounder. Make of that what you will.
