True, he was very unlucky. I reckon there are only a handful of guys who would have beaten him, and he just so happened to get drawn against one of them in the first round.

Secind tier South African cricket has never been particularly strong or relevant to anything.
Wasn't exactly second tier, since they weren't playing international cricket at the time. Plus, you know, his County and WSC records are there too, unless you want to discount them.

It was the second division of the competition playing against mainly B sides, that is not as good a standard as first class cricket suggests, regardless of if they were playing international cricket or not.
