Yeah that's really it. These two sides - if fully fit - should put up some really good, contested cricket but the pitches for the last year have just been dreadful.

It's not much surprise we get dicked when the ball moves two inches sideways either off pace bowlers or spinners when these are the tracks we play on.
Moreover both the sides are known for aggressive cricket, and McCullum is the most over-aggressive test captain I have seen. Still without any rain delay a place with WACA's reputation doesn't even look like producing a result. This is disappointing for a cricket fan.

You have to be suspicious as to the motivation behind it

I live on the Goldie and IIRC the weather in the weeks leading up to the Gabba test was generally hot with rain on some nights.

In other words, perfect for growing grass (as indicated by the state of the outfield and the rest of the square) and I remember thinking beforehand that the pitch might be pretty sporting

Lost revenue. Produce a pitch that's even slightly sporty and Australia's batsmen will line up to get themselves out, costing the ground 2 days worth of revenue.

Admittedly not as much of a concern in Brisbane given the cumulative attendance for a Test tends to be in the region of 30 people.

Has to be lost revenue. Make it a road to get 5 days and they figure that most of the time Australia at home will eventually win or draw. Only other thought is good batting conditions and shorter boundaries make it more like T20 and get more casuals.

Imo the state of our pitches could have something to do with the CA directive to the states a few years back to start producing more batting friendly pitches in the shield. The theory was our state players weren't learning to ability to make hundreds with the pitches overly bowler friendly.

Seems now most of our players are more than capable of making hundreds, but only on our docile pitches which funnily enough opposition batsman find quite easy to make hundreds on to

Indeed - the people of WA need to be rewarded with more tests, they really got behind it. Brisbane not so much.

So New Zealand are getting a warm up game at the WACA AFTER the test match.
The whole tour factoring into account the warm up fiasco on a sub standard pitch has had a series of factors stacked against New Zealand. Some of them minor. No we don't really care about that tour match being cancelled all that much. To some bigger factors like day 1 of the WACCA being played on what Mark Nicholas was clearly a day 3 pitch based on the lack of green grass compared to past years.

Still every team in the world does it, e.g. India's pitches will never ever ever be green until one day they produce some world class seamers then they will suddenly change.

Conclusion - nothing really to see here move along.

At least the umpiring has been good. Try touring Australia in the 1980s when you had all of the above shananigans and blatantly cheating umpires - batsman got sawn off left right and centre. Neutral umpires has been the best thing for cricket since the invention of the helmet. Every time I break out this story Heef and others remind me of Fred Goodall and his one eyed calls. So yeah all the umpires were homers except for England's for some reason. They were outstandingly fair. Never figured that one out.

You know it's great that we have had neutral umpires before the explosion of social media. I can only imagine the social media backlash to cheating umpires.

Dunno Bracewell has surprised me and bowled pretty well this tour. Nothing of that Hobart standard though.
