Yes James, you need more time to bowl them out if they're not going to declare. You also need a bigger lead though.

So Southee has offered more actual effective runs than Hoggard but nowhere near as many as you'd hope from someone who averages well over double what Hoggard did (Hoggard averaged 7!). He could definitely score less runs for better team results.

You could just say that Hoggard batted with better batsmen though. The NZ top six was awful for the first half of Southee's career.
