I've had a crack at this.

England scored 1876 runs while Hoggard was at the crease in Test cricket. Per Hoggard innings this was 20.39 runs.
New Zealand have scored 1834 runs with Southee has been at the crease in Test cricket. Per Southee innings this has been 26.20 runs.

So Southee has offered more actual effective runs than Hoggard but nowhere near as many as you'd hope from someone who averages well over double what Hoggard did (Hoggard averaged 7!). He could definitely score less runs for better team results.

Crazy how Taylor has only been in 4 session to make almost 300. Once upon a time I would've seen making 200+ in a day as pretty outrageous but he seems to have batted very sensibly.

Not from Southee. Craig can defend though and that was a horrendous hoick.

Edit: And it hasn't been exactly surprising that Starc's looked like the only real threat this morning. So if Craig had made the effort to survive the initial Starc spell we would have been much better set up.
