Where did this thing about "absolute howlers" even come from?
How can McCullum standing at an angle to what the umpire has seen determine what constitutes an absolute howler or not? He's concentrating on fielding, the umpire is concentrating on adjudicating.

I'd rather the technology was applied to get correct decisions.
I've seen plenty of absolute howlers that are obvious even when fielding at deep midwicket lol

And btw McCullum isn't sequestered in a room immediately after the incident before deciding whether to review, he's allowed to ask people with better views (eg. bowler, keeper)

It's always what the system was set up to do. That's why umpire's call is a thing. It's also important to build in to a system like this to give a small degree of inaccuracy.

Good on you mate, I'm sure you were playing at international level with the associated noise and pressure.

Which is a valid point - and I tend to agree with your earlier comment that ideally the 3rd umpire should be able to check the replay and feed it back to the umpire to make use of the technology (rugby being one example which is trying this).

Umpires are naturally going to make a number of errors (history suggests this is always the case) & there is probably more scope to help them out. The problem is how many interruptions in play can be allowed. I'd be interested to see approximately how many appeals you'd get a day, what additional time it would take if the umpire did check a replay in each case.

Wonder how Estraya would bowl on this. Extra pace of Starc and MJ could prove handy but cant see much swing on offer. NZ has to bat decently

Great post. The thread is greatly enhanced by your profound and insightful comments.

Injuries, inconsistent and medium paced bowlers, not good enough or just out of form batsman mixed with hype....possibly the worst combination you could bring to Australia as an under-dog. Thank god there isn't a one day tour after this for NZL, or it'd be a WC final repeat very match. So much for revenge. Really do hope that the kiwis bounce back, they're so much better than this and everyone knows that.

I'm almost positive it will seem like an entirely different track when your lot get the nut in their hands. There's no fear factor with our bowlers who are lucky to get the odd deliver past 140 on these tracks that don't go sideways, the batsmen can just hover of the front-foot. Will be a different ball game with the two Mitch's and I can see Lyon causing all sorts of problems with the extra bounce when it comes to the offie.

Boult here has been probably one of the most disappointing individual performances over a series for a long time.
