Really hope the kiwis somehow get their **** together for the second test. Australia smashing teams at home isn't fun to watch if it isn't England.

Ooooh look who's all puffed up just because the local curators abandoned all pretence of producing watchable cricket and managed to produce a **** heap so rancid that even Dean ****in' Elgar could take a bag. Oh India, it's as though you never left us.
Says a lot about NZ that a part timer is already more successful with the ball in India than every single spinner in little NZ's history. He'd walk into the current NZ side as a specialist spinner no problem.

Of course he would. Who needs trent boultor tim southee when virat lolhi and his merry band of spuds collapse to dean elgar. Good chance for tim to rest his back

yes that's what nz need, more rest instead of preparing for a test match.

now that you mention it, it was pretty convenient of him to disappear once he knew his team was in deep ****.

Spotlight on Guptill.

He has played 3 tests since his recall averaging 31 and striking at 48. His overall career is a 29 average with SR of 44

His technique
Guptill Ideally needs to start getting more front foot drives away, his stance looks a bit awkward and like he will be unable to really establish solid feet positioning to support driving on the up. But he must learn, he is tapping too many deliveries back to the bowlers and mid on and mid off.

His hands.
Some really go after him for having hard hands. He actually learned in the 2nd innings of this test. On 1-2 occassions that caught my eye he gave with the ball and even let the bat twist in his hand as he ran the ball out to point. If you play the same shot with hard hands and don’t give it flies to 3rd slip just like his dismissal vs Hazelwood 1st dig. And yes Martin it was your fault you got out in the first inning despite the commentators giving the glory to the bowler.

His history.
At one point he couldn't even back foot defend to save his life, so he is learning new shots all the time. I don't know why he doesn't have every shot in his locker but he is rapidly working on it. His history of learning fills me with hope. The only way to refine his technique further is throw downs. Not the nets. The nets does jack all from a learning perspective although is vital for maintaining your hand eye coordination.

His biggest asset:
His experience. He has played a decent number of test matches and actually seems to learn from each dismissal. Probably his most likeable quality unlike Fulton or Rutherford who just seem to well not learn.

Where does he go from here:
1) He probably needs to develop another scoring option that he can execute 100 out of 100 times against even a new swinging ball when all are getting out around him. I think he would have stayed in for longer in the second dig had he been rotating the strike just ten percent better.
2) Continue to let the bat twist in his hands against leg cutters. It is an easy skill and easier than just letting the bat go limp like Kane does, or withdrawing the bat inside the line like Ross.
3) Completely rework that back foot punch from scratch and bring the square cut more into play. A back foot punch has a fluid back lift and the bat goes taut at point of impact. Martin's entire stroke is rigid from back lift to follow through. Lara's shot to bring up 400 runs by memory was a back foot cover drive and it looks picture perfect. More like Lara Guptill. Less like a robot.

What is my projection for him:
I think he can boost his average to 35 maybe. Which is good enough for an opener. Sorry for making you cringe Flem but it is. Studies show that openers average 5 runs less than the middle order because it is such a hard position. 35 average would be good enough to be the junior opening partner for at least 4-5 teams going around.

Yeah until NZ uncover a gun opener to partner Latham, Guppy should hold his spot with a 35 average assuming he does his job in tough situations. Mostly because he's a gun in the field, will work his arse off, and seems like the kind of guy who will do anything in his power to contribute to the team despite being not very good at red ball cricket.

Whats guppy's average against top 8 teams?I suppose when you want him to average 35, it should be against top teams which means his overall average should boost up to 40 thanks to minnow beating

Isn't it amazing. Lose the Ashes, and about an hour into the first Test they're beating their chests again.

I would go so far as to say this is the most despisable sporting side put together since the 1987 Detroit Pistons. I really can't think of another (unless you consider the 2014 Australian cricket side to be a different entity)

dont be hurt that CA awarded the prime summer tests to a superior WI outfit

Taylor is just one of those guys who looks average when he scores runs, absolutely terrible when he doesn't, and randomly has days when the sun shines out his arse. Definitely a cut below world XI material but any side in the world wouldn't mind having him.
don't think India will necessarily pick him in playing XI now

Yeah, South Africa would be interesting as well. He's a much better batsman than Duminy but Duminy's really important to the balance of their attack, which leaves him competing with Faf. I think that's a 50/50 call tbh. I suppose they might push Faf up to open and leave out van Zyl.

Ya that's better than pushing Taylor up to open and watch him dance. :p

Anyway I want five bowlers. Don't even care if it meams twin spin. Four bowlers is begging for southee and boult out for six months.

Wheeler injured, milne injured, boult short of a gallop, southee nearly injured, henry is injury prone...ed nuttall the mini-boult book your ticket

On an unrelated note, how gun is lyon? Nailed one of the best batsmen in the world who loves offies.
This is a AUS team who despite the excellent 1st test batting performance still hasn't eradicated the recent history since 2009 trend of being prone to an all-mighty batting collapse to good seam attack in the right conditions. Those right conditions could be Perth vs a simple 4-man pace attack.

He's a better batsman than Duminy to the extent I'd take having Elgar's offies as my 5th bowler I think, small sacrifice to make given the recent evidence of him doing the business on a spinning track
