**** reading this thread is so satisfying. You annoying Kiwi ****s sure lost your ****iness fast.
even better is that the all ****ing aussie cricketing hipsters who were like "you know the kiwis could actually beat us. they have a very good team now" as if were letting us into a massive ****ing secret have got ****ing egg all over their face.

they'll have to go back to talking about how unlucky stuart ****ing law was and how he'd walk into the team nowadays or ****ing drone on about how we just can't play swing bowling

all the little benchmark wannabes making lame fixing jokes and generic sycophantic straya comments has made this tour thread a great read.

Reckon you need to go 4 seamers + Williamson.

Santner doesn't seem ready. A real bit-part player that would only get a run because he 'bowls a bit'. Going off stats he doesn;t bowl much with a FC average over 50. Way better off picking Ronchi to keep and bat 7, with Watling at 6 as a bat for mine.
Santner's stats aren't really the best things to go off tbh. He's a lot better than mid-20s bat, 50+ bowl suggests.

You've come to the right conclusion though -- he's not ready, and damn sure shouldn't get a run at the WACA. That said, if he does, I reckon he won't utterly disgrace himself; there's enough there with him to suggest that he could be a very useful player for NZ going forward.

It is depressing, though, that Devcich doesn't look like *that* bad an option at #6 at the moment.

Someone mentioned Sam Wells and tbh he is more likely to bat to his domestic average than both Lord Colins and the other see ball hit ball bullies. Ages ago I watched his 70 odd against Milne, Wheeler and I think Bracewell on the green top Milne destroyed Otago on (including Neesham for a duck) and from memory he was a class above his team that knock. Batted really really well.

He's the king of starts (look at his terrible conversion rate). I wouldn't back him to contribute much because it's Australia at the WACA but in a world with no Neesham or Anderson long term (likely) and no selectors determined to throw not quite a batsman or spinner current Santner to the wolves (we kind of have to now as Howsie reminded me) Wells wouldn't disgrace the side. A much better percentage pick than the pretty averages of some others plus he got the tick of approval from John Wright who had good intuition for the best players available at the time.

Nah we'll have Anderson long term, he just won't be bowling (or if he does his bowling will devolve to some Styris-style medium pacers).

The same thing will happen leading up to the return series.

You'll hear plenty of "we lost in Australia because they were at home and everyone wins at home, unfamiliar conditions blah blah but now we are in NZ we have a great chance to win"

Then when NZ get thrashed at home it'll be an action replay of exactly what's happening now

Seriously though I'd prefer to see some close games/series

CdG isn't bowling atm due to injury.

Nah the stuff.co.nz commenters may finally be vindicated this weekend. The harsh reality of facing MJ in the wild west perhaps called for the debut of just one man. The man who would rock up in Perth as a grifter and speculator, to represent the very antithesis of Sodhi, Santner and ideological wetness.

An Anton Devcich highlight reel.

Dan's going to infract you for this.

Debuting a spinner/batsman who's not quite good enough to bat 7at the Waca against Johnson and Starc.
Its just such an absurd idea isn't it?

Love all rounders myself, but this is just the worst sort of tokenism going. Just pick Ronchi and four fast bowlers, get Kane to twirl it if needs be.

Look, everyone would've got some form of enjoyment out of seeing this guy batting in Perth this weekend. The theme of this whole summer is about employing pink and meretricious methods to finally get every last Darren, Zane and Kayla hooked on cricket, after all. Give the stuff.co.nz comments section what it demands.

I didn't see any of the final days play. Was out of town and the game was over before I got back. I think there are positives in the batting for NZ. We have seen much worse batting displays from visiting teams. The bowling was abject though. I'm struggling to think of a more toothless looking display.

Meh. New Zealand has made a habit of getting smashed in the first test of a series before turning it around, you're two English mates can attest to that. As long as Southee is fit and ready to go for the second test I'm backing us to turn it around at some point.
