**Official** New Zealand in Australia 2015

Good to see McCullum copping some for his **** captaincy throughout the match. HE cost us that first test in England, and while it wasn't his fault nobody bar Williamson turned up for this test he was horrible again in the first two sessions.

This is getting way off topic but disagree with this. Mccollum's captaincy on day 1 didn't help, but the real factors in New Zealand's defeat were Craig's inability to build any pressure on day 4, Southee not adjusting at all to the end of T20 cricket and Ben Stokes' excellence.

the overall sentiment not the specifics
yeah then I guess I'm with him too. It's not a complete disaster and the end of NZ cricket as we know it or whatever. Not sure anyone is arguing otherwise.

We were all kinda arguing the issue of whether NZ got toyed with or not in the particular game though.

us NZers tend to slip into Doom and Gloom mode easier than most. It's default setting.

Reckon you need to go 4 seamers + Williamson.

Santner doesn't seem ready. A real bit-part player that would only get a run because he 'bowls a bit'. Going off stats he doesn;t bowl much with a FC average over 50. Way better off picking Ronchi to keep and bat 7, with Watling at 6 as a bat for mine.

I could get behind this.

We basically scored 300 in both innings. I therefore don't think that Australia smashed us by any stretch. They did win comfortably though.
lol

I will not join you in revelling in misery. I think too much is being read into the 3rd innings and people are not seeing it for what it was: Flat track/scoreboard situation bullying.
And I think that not enough is being read into the fact that this match was in AUSTRALIA. They know those conditions. They grew up with them. The first match of a tour there is always difficult. Our batsman aside for Kane all looked in better nick in the 2nd dig.

Anyway Bahnz let's agree to disagree.
I can respect patriotic delusion. If 8/800ish vs 20/600ish isn't "smashed" then I don't know what is. 300 in each innings on a road like that where your opposition makes 4/550 declared is hardly impressive.

It could have been worse though. Despite how one-sided the scoreboard was, at times it definitely felt as though NZ were putting up a contest at least, especially with KW batting.

Doesn't Colin de Grandhomme still exist? Surely a better fit than Mitch "Leave the tailenders to me" McClenaghan
CdG isn't bowling atm due to injury.

Nah the stuff.co.nz commenters may finally be vindicated this weekend. The harsh reality of facing MJ in the wild west perhaps called for the debut of just one man. The man who would rock up in Perth as a grifter and speculator, to represent the very antithesis of Sodhi, Santner and ideological wetness.

I think our captain needs to be given a kick up the jacksie by Hesson. I watched part of the first day, and what I saw with the chopping and changing of field settings was under eleven year old captaincy. And according to the commentators he had been worse in the first session and had apparently costed us 30-40 runs on the first day. Maybe even a wicket or two if we had've been able to dry them up a bit.

Where you place your field is critical. If you give a bowler a mid on and a square leg then he will bowl in specific areas, if you give him a mid wicket as well then he can afford to get a bit straighter. If you give him a short midwicket for four balls and a short cover for the final two balls you will mess with the bowler.

I think if we get nothing out of this game other than McCullum becoming more patient with his field settings I will be a happy man.

.
McCullum was absolutely dreadful on day 1

How a bowler can be expected to be consistent when fields are being radically changed in the space of a few balls is beyond me

Many of us posted similar thoughts but what do keyboard warriors know?

Well, I can tell you that we wouldn't have done any worse than 8-820 by simply instructing the bowlers to bowl a length on or about off-stump and setting the field accordingly
