That footwork from Watling for the Burns wicket is why he's the best keeper in the world.

Someone like Haddin would've taken that with a dive and it would've looked fantastic, but Watling just wanders across and casually takes it in front of first slip. He can also dive like Haddin when he needs to. He just makes sure he doesn't often need to.

Nah was averaging low 130's in England. Definitely well off his best though.
He's getting toyed around with right now. Shame really he's so much better than this. And to clarify he's easily fallen 5-7km's on average tho, even for his test bowling speeds. Playing through injury in England and perhaps hasn't fully recovered yet?

Regarding Burns - haven't watched this inning so far. He just looks a more lo player than longer form player at the moment. Has a technique which seems a bit open. Is not some one who is hopeless though. Can mature into a fine longer form player too. Just first impressions from the first dig.

Also, Burns should be persisted with for the summer possibly as he is decent at least and not dire.

It's been a while though. Shame that he looks so far away from being at his best from the very beginning of the first test. I can understand if fatique and fitness wears you down by the end of the series but if you don't bring you A game on an Australian tour from the start, it's just unacceptable and you are not doing your team any favours.

Boult's always been someone who benefited from bowling a lot of overs to get into rhythm. He's extremely fit so he doesn't tend to fatigue over series.

The problem is he simply hasn't bowled enough overs since his injury.

Late to this thread as I've only been able to catch bits and pieces of the game, but brilliant face-saving from KW. Reminds me so much of those 90's Tendulkar knocks abroad where he would pretty much be batting on a different plane to the others.

Could the tail have hung around a bit longer, or is this realistically as deep as the NZ innings could go?

Think one Watling went the tail were above par, realistically. Could've been blown apart by Johnson or Starc before the new ball arrived.

Playing Boult in that ODI series in England just after the tests was the worst possible decision at the time, though the damage might have been done by then. Have to hope by the time Perth comes up Southee is fit and Boult is back in the groove else its death.

Any updates on the Southee injury?

You have two genuine strike bowlers, one has already broken down, the other looks under prepared and perhaps unfit.

I am sorry but this is just bad management and preparation for such an important and major series. This looks a bit like India in England 2011 coming with a lot of expectations as the number 1 team and then Zaheer going off on the first morning.

Not like New Zealand were playing constantly since the England series.

Hard to strike a balance between getting players ready and ticking boxes, or telling them to be personally responsible and professional athletes.

Hesson doesn't strike me as someone who goes into things underprepared, but I think he'll have some serious re-evaluation to do here.
