McCullum's captaincy was absolutely woeful today

Another "funky, new age captain" (Clarke) had his bad days but this was absolutely dire

Even when he celebrated Khawaja looked mournful, hope to see him visibly enjoying himself out there now with that weight off his back.

Can someone tell me why Boult and Southee are so down on pace....seems like everyone just keeps ignoring that issue

Yeah Boult and Southee are both 135 kmh bowlers in tests. They tend to bowl quicker in ODI's because they only have to get through 10 overs in a day as opposed to 20+ in tests. Same reason why Mitch Starc whips it down at 150 kmh in ODI's but tends to operate in the low-mid 140's in tests.

Umm they very clearly are. OK maybe not southee not so much but definitely boult.
He's always been in the 130-140kph range. Sometimes a bit quicker than that. He wasn't abnormally slow today.

He was abnormally inaccurate. Clearly hasn't bowled enough overs recently.

I quite like McCullum, he's the sort of captain that's always looking to make things happen.

He/the media that adore him need to start understanding that sometimes you're under the cosh and the answer isn't just to tinker with positions by a yard or so. Sometimes you just need to set a defensive field and make the other side work for their runs.

Nah, Starc is generally very quick but inaccurate

In ODIs, they only have 10 overs to get at him with a ball that swings more

Anyway tough day. I was sitting squarish of the wicket so tough to judge the lines we bowled, but the lengths from the seam bowlers certainly looked too short a lot of the time. Especially as the ball got older - what are you really going to achieve from bowling any more than the occasional bouncer on a flat wicket at that stage of the innings?

And that's without even considering Craig - ugh, the number of long hops was just horrendous.

Australia on track to declare at 550-650 and it's going to take a monumental effort to bat our way out of defeat.

Edit: Warner was excellent of course - a superb innings and Australia gave us nothing all day (ok apart from maybe Warner's dismissal).

The series starting at 390-2 would be in keeping with Australia's advantage of playing meaningful FC red and pink-ball cricket while we play a bunch of 2nd XIers on cow dung...but I'm pretty sure that's not where the series starts at all. Once the other side is locked and loaded for 500/600 in the first innings, you're facing immense scoreboard pressure against a pretty strong attack. I'd say it's definitely started. I'm not saying we bowled awfully at all or the series is over, or we're 1-0 down. It's just a long road to hoe to get to Perth on an even keel, and I don't think that's getting too knee-jerky.

I felt like Brisbane was the one we could really win, a bit of bounce but hopefully shape on the first day. We didn't look assertive enough.
That's fair, might have been too harsh. But, that said, I don't agree they're nailed on for 500. Khawaja or Smith goes early tomorrow and you have a very inexperienced and recently collapsy line-up to follow. They're getting 400 and that's great but 500 is a long way off.

You think so? If NZ can get 8 for under 111 they've done sensational but Australia will probably be feeling very confident that the pitch is now great for bowling and that couldn't hurt with almost 500 on the board.

I think we should look at making 600 and have a full session at NZ tomorrow. Enforce the follow on too, there is nothing wrong at all if one of our quick bowlers have to unfortunately miss out on the WACA Test  Siddle will have to come in.

Top cat reaching 2007 bahnz levels of pessimism here. This test is impossible for Australia to lose unless they find a previously unknown trench of direness. Hot favourites to go 1-0 up with the WACA Johnson fortress to come. NZ have blown it in a single day unless the batsmen pull one out of the bag

Good things - ross' catching and batting are linked and he took a good one today. Runs incoming

Man, we got caned today. The poorest bowling I've seen for a while. I hate Warner but I hate to hate him because he really is superb.

In fact I could kind of handle a series loss if Ross went big and finally shut ian chappell up about him being a minnow bashing slogger. Spudwaja tonning up is an ominous sign for #phlegmtabloidsLtd though
