I don't even think Fergie could have done it without some backlash. Even when he was acting like a dick over contracts Rooney has enjoyed a lot of support.

No I think he definitely could have. All comes down to results, if it works they can live with anything.

All things considered LVG has done a 5/10 job so far. 4th was the minimum expected and Liverpool getting **** made that a formality. The team scores very low on aesthetic value and he's spent a lot of money, with most of his signings not working out. On the plus side the team has always been moving in the right direction, albeit at an unsatisfactory pace, and his record in big games is very good. We definitely shouldn't be thinking about sacking him but I really don't see him winning us the league before retiring.

Think you raise an interesting point in terms of Liverpool being ****. Had they not regressed so badly last season and signed someone half decent instead of Balotelli, United would have struggled to get 4th. Say you'd finished 5th, would this have been seen as progress given you were 7th the year before, or would there be someone else in the hot seat?

All irrelevant because United were deservedly 4th but there was a papering over the cracks element to it. Similar to Houllier's last season with Liverpool.

I mean it was obviously an improvement on the Moyes season, but.

I would hope they'd have fired him for finishing 5th given the money he spent. It would sort of depend how the players, fans etc reacted. The order you do things kind of matters, like if he had started terribly but won his last 10 games but still finished 5th I think he'd get another year.

I hate how Fellaini has become the stick of choice to beat him with though. Firstly because we don't try to hoof to him, except chasing a goal with hardly any time left. But also because there's no logic to it. It's just snobbery. We played far, far better football last season when he was in the team. The high press is so fashionable now and his chest just lets you bypass it completely and get players free between the lines, like for Mata's first at Liverpool last season. Which was a great goal. Of all the hate figures we have he's the least deserving.

Anyone else find it amusing that the likes of Shearer spent all last season telling van Gaal that Rooney needed to be played as a number 9?

Well it stops him from playing 10 and playing out of position. Plus then he slows down the attack by turning backwards and spraying useless sideways Hollywood balls.

Look with a good enough 9 or 10 alongside he would be decent but for his profile and pay is that really good enough.

Anyone else think Shlevey looked really quite decent yesterday?

Sergio Romero also doing his best to validate my "South American Keepers are seriously dodgy" hypothesis.

Found his level. Very good player but doesn't quite have the quality for a really top team.

Considering how the market's exploded Swansea got themselves a bargain.

Basic offer of # MUFC is over € 60M € 20M bonus. Some bonuses are achievable as ranked by MU and the future of the player!

Christ.

This is a mental transfer, people laughed at City for Sterling, but that was a proven Premiership player, this is a guy just off barely off one season in a poorish league/ Surely this is a type of player you want in for a pre season as well, rather than just throw in at the deep end? Heck they could have got Lukaku or Benteke for half that or many more proven players for such a huge fee.

Januzzi and Hernandez 2 proven players out when everyone agrees they don't have much depth up front a day before the transfer window closes?

Really odd stuff.

"Proven" is such a bull**** word. As if signing experienced players is guaranteed to work out every time, all of our worst signings since Fergie left have been the "proven" ones without a single exception. Hopefully Schweinsteiger bucks the trend.

I've no idea if this is a good signing or not. Don't think I've ever seen the guy play.

On Schweinsteiger, while there's no doubting the bloke's quality signing a guy who's been injured for 2 years has to be a bit of a risk.

Never heard of Martial and the number seems huge for his goal output. So much for not needing a striker LVG.

Is LVG Harry in disguise? Have a problem? Buy a player.
