*Official* Fifth Test at the Oval

Why funny? There's been loads of bowlers not consistent enough to have a good record, but can be a handful on their day. Ishant Sharma syndrome sadly.

Stokes may well improve as time goes by, although it's not guaranteed.
He will be given lots of time to improve as well given he can bat.

Wood is surely more likely to play in the gulf given he's a more skiddy bowler. No point playing Broad and Finn out there.
I don't know the taller bowlers have tended to do well there in the past. Finn was great in the ODIs three years ago after Broad was the best quick in the tests. Morkel and Philander have tended to do better than Steyn too.

I think he's just genuinely been really unlucky so far in his career, tbh.

Doesn't say a lot that Hazlewood and Starc haven't even bowled that well against the left handers and they've still got Lyth out overtime.

Of course & I suspect like Flintoff he will improve his control and he shouldn't lose any pace for a good 3-4 years unless his body gives way.
I think he'll get his average down to low 30s in a couple of years.

The issue he will have is as 4th seamer he will get a lot of bowling when teams are 200-2 and not even see the ball when we have teams 40-5.

Hes just got to make his mark when he does bowl.

International Regular
Oh for sure. In his 7th test opening & averages 21. You'd almost think he needs to ton up here.
Agreed. A fifty would, rightfully in my opinion, be judged as a no pressure, dead rubber, fair innings. He really needs to be part of two or three partnerships that bring England back into this test. A tough ask, but given his record so far, it's the only thing that justifies his (near) future selection.

I really wish that Johnson had some slight niggle before the game and we were watching Cummins or Siddle with the new ball.
