*Official* 3rd Test at Edgbaston

Test opener batting through hasn't happened since 2011 . . . and it was David Warner

Aus have got the best openers i guess

or the ****tiest middle order?
Bit of both. I wouldn't argue against a current world XI having Rogers and Warner opening. And the problems with your middle order have been well enough documented on these boards.

I like the shape of the lights at Edgbaston, do they hold outdoor performances of Wicked there when there's no sport on?

maaaaybe not quite the right call to bat first
Yeah, the fact both teams have a fairly ordinary batting line-up might suggest batting first was a bit overly optimistic. Piling on 400 in this first day on a deck that's doing a bit would be going against recent trends, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Tbf, Clarke has declared his 1st innings early on about 200 to get a bowl at the opposition before close once. But he lost it by an innings.

he won't be forced to make such a decision the way we're going

Australia 123 a.o England 53/8 end of today. Probably 69 overs of play

The biggest indicator should have been the weather forecast to be honest.

Poor move by Clarke

The weather forecast didn't say it was going to rain on and off all day though. It said some showers in the morning and then it'd be clear until 3 or 4. The sun also came out during the later stages of the first session.

Obviously bowling first has been highly advantageous so it would have been nice to make that call, but Cook was going to bat as well so... can't be too critical of Clarke I don't think.

I spent a quiet half hour watching the 1997 Edgbaston test on youtube earlier.

So far it's all going to plan, with Root and Bairstow to play the Hussain and Thorpe roles.
