Their batting has been really terrible all season. Just looking at the stats now, there have only been three tons scored for them all season, and one of them was way back in the first game (by Myburgh, who they've dropped). Cooper must be in serious danger of the axe himself given he'd actually been even worse than Myburgh leading into this game (one half century all season) and then failed again here as well.

It's not really a bad batting lineup on paper either.
It's not terrible on paper, but nowhere near as impressive as it looked two or three years ago. Tres decline and loses of Compton, Kieswetter, Buttler and even Suppiah has been huge. I knew it would be a pretty long season.

Somerset all out with a lead of 70 and a possible 20 overs left. Oh well, always nice to have a day off..

Jeets with 9fer. Somerset declined a fair bit though, still good younger players so few more bats and they will be fine.

Yeah, I've been following them reasonably closely for the most part. Consistently bailed out by the engine room icing while Abell plays the Latham sole cake role, albeit one with a bit of Ton-less Travis filling.

Ben Harmison has his hundred for the season, the one that should ensure a contract extension as Kent finally start to push on.

Worcs fell one short of the follow-on target - will Gale put them in again though?

Somerset would have been better served trying to sign a top order bat rather than topping up their endless list of allrounders in Van der Merwe.

Sussex still having to play Yorkshire twice in the championship look especially vulnerable to relegation right now.
Magoffin has applied for his British citizenship (or whatever is required) and is awaiting confirmation of that in the near future - and so he'll become a domestic player and Sussex will be able to sign another overseas player..

Lancs and Surrey looking good to join the first division.

With arguably the opening bowler of the season in Brooks coming on third change it was hard to see him worried about running out of bowlers.

Such a misshapen looking attack with no spin and what can realistically be called three 10s and 9 for a tail. But the figures this season are too good, it seems like Plunkett may even be the one to be dropped for Rashid soon. You usually look at an attack that features Patterson and figure out who's not fit this time but he's taken 40 odd wickets at 20 or something. Madness. Everything's coming up white roses.

true story - if Anderson went down injured this ashes I would replace him with Rushworth at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge (but not the Oval). Would be the closest like for like replacement. Would just bowl wicket to wicket, straight and full at 78 and 79mph and wobble the ball around. Finn, Footitt, or Plunkett probably come in for Broad or Wood but composition of attack is off if those guys comes in for Anderson. Not normally a fan of the county trundler but he's been brilliant this season with not a whole lot of help from the other bowlers. I'm not convinced Australia would handle him too well either. Hard to go really hard at Rushworth on a slow low wicket.

I had to read that quite a few times. You think really "bowl wicket to wicket, straight and full at 78 and 79mph and wobble the ball around" is a description of a successful Anderson?

There is no-one like Anderson but he's the closest they've got. If there is no Anderson and say the attack is Broad, Finn, Wood, Stokes there is no one who even swings the ball really in the attack, and Broad is the only really containing bowler there and you don't really want him doing that job.

It's certainly closer than 'try and hit the deck hard at 84mph from back of a length' i.e. Steve Finn

Somerset have signed Adam Hose, good that he won't be competing for a place with the Overton twins, after all it would have to be bros before Hose.

Oh c'mon, stop groaning, I just had too......................

Crane coming out on top in the battle of the leg spinners.

Interestingly I read that Brad Taylor(another England u19 highly rated spinner of the offspin variation) would have played this game instead of Crane but was injured.

Bit of background info on Crane and some of the stuff hampshire are doing with their spinners. The making of Mason Crane (From Daily Echo)

Not sure where all of this leaves Briggs. Obviously invaluable in the shorter formats but a question mark over the 4 day format as not much of a turner of the ball and if Dawson plays as a bat (who also bowls decent sla) they may prefer (as they have in this game) to play Crane or Brad Taylor because of the variation and they're possibly more capable of bowling the team to a win.

Crane and McManus the first bit of good news we have had all season, hope they play the rest of the season, are as good as relegated already.
