*Official* 2nd Test at Lord's

It was obviously a batting friendly track but there was bounce, carry, and plenty of swing to be had. There's also the slope to be used.

Not a bad pitch IMO.
Did you not see the couple of edges that either bounced or barely reached feet height?

Really? 450 is where they should be not long after lunch.
Yeah, if I were Clarke I'd not consider declaration before the last hour of the day. The best chance Australia has for winning this is to unleash Johnson and Starc on England's tired batsmen for an hour or so, try and pick up 2 or 3 wickets before the close, and then capitalise on day 3 to gain a huge lead (pretty much the template they set in Adelaide 2013).

regardless of the state of the pitch I'm really happy with how Australia batted, especially in the second session. England had done well to stem the flow of runs and were bowling tight, instead of throwing the game away Smith and Rogers showed great application and patience to bat through unscathed

This pitch had no carry.

There was swing on offer, and Broad managed to extract some movement off the pitch somehow, but by and large the wicket was unthreatening. I didn't catch the first session, but from what I saw England's only poor period with the ball was between the two batsmen tonning up and the second new ball being taken. Couple of looseners, an overthrow, conceded a few runs there they shouldn't have. But overall they were good. And Cook kept trying new things. Smith and Rogers just batted really, really well.

agree with the analysis of the pitch but England bowled quite poorly in the first hour of the first session, when the ball was doing a bit and overcast conditions provided at least a little bit of assistance to the bowlers

Inevitably I've noticed more often than not ,people only go "urgggh this pitch..." on CW when it's their country's bowlers looking ineffective. Just wait for two innings to be played, although the pitch might change plenty by the time England get a bat.

If it's that flat, then they'll need some recovery time for their bowling. No use going to 650+, because you might not have time to bat again and give your bowlers a rest.

With the confined Test schedules these days, think it's part of making sure that your bowlers don't break down.
This.

Batting once and making 700+ is generally only viable if you're batting second imo. Unless you want your bowlers to break down.

I think there were quite a number of australians moaning about the pitch as well.

So we're at least consistent.

I found Ponting commenting on Cook's captaincy to be quite a strange experience. Because I think they both captain in almost identical manner. It's just that Ponting had McGrath and Warne

Yeah the guys in Ponting's teams were all super attacking already, and they had the clout to dictate their fields etc.

Ponting is just the best though.

I don't know. If England bat badly we will have geniuses like Botham saying how the pitch has deteriorated. In reality I can't see how a good pitch on day one becomes a deteriorated one until at least the 4th day. This pitch lacks true pace and bounce but it is still a lot better than Cardiff. If Johnson and co. can't get England out here, then I'd be worried.

With nine wickets in hand and a score of 330 already on board I think Australia can almost afford to play in one day mode from now for the rest of the innings. Another 250-270 in 40-45 overs. They should look to declare an hour or so after lunch. They need to give themselves as much time to get England out twice, considering it is they who are 1-0 down.

Pontings analysis as an impartial commentator is 1000x better than his captaincy

Yeah rate Punter's commentary, wish more diversity with the women commentating happened though. Get rid of some of the Boof heads

yes have been impressed with the little I have seen of Pontings commentary, at least he isn't self promoting himself and bleating about ***** poker like his fellow country man..
