re how haddin managed to drop that catch as someone on commentary keeps on expressing their disbelief

the late in swing has led to him going towards the leg stump and then the edge has forced him to dive towards the off side. his foot work isn't strong enough to cover the sudden projected change in direction, it's then just not stuck. Don't really think it's hard to figure out tbh. it's a classic haddin flaw.

edit i'm not really sure what impact the length of the delivery has had on things. probably meant the pitch didn't slow things down

I think Johnson was guilty of trying too hard for a wicket in those last 2 overs before lunch. His first spell was quite good in my (admittedly bias) opinion.

Both Mitchells have been disappointing against this pair. Haze is bowling well to Root, but he lacks a plan against Balance.

Let's see what Lyon serves now.

Is there a magnet of some kind somewhere that is attracting the ball? Why is everyone bowling outside leg?

I was worried that the 2 Mitches would be inconsistent with Ryan out and that looks to be the case so far. Thank goodness the selectors don't share jedibrahs opinion on Lyon. Almost Watto time I think.

You guys know he averages 52 in test cricket, right? Sure he has no front foot game but it hasn't stopped him scoring a tonne of runs before. To read this thread you would think he's Chris Martin.
Trying to work out why it is he has a problem. I think Holding was on to something when he was talking about how close to the stumps he gets. Means he can bowl a very attacking line to the right handers with everything hitting the stumps, but the opposite problem for the left handers. It's either magic balls or more likely drifting onto the pads or swinging from the hand outside off. What makes left armers like Boult so hard to face for LHBs is the angle in and then movement away, but Starc doesn't really get the same angle in.
Would be interested in analysing his run up when he's got a lefties in the crease. Caught a segment with McGrath the other day and he mentioned that he would start his run up a step to the left if he was bowling to a lefty so that he'd still get all his angles right and bowl it where he wanted it.
Starc almost "pushes" the ball out in his release. His right shoulder opens up differently for right handers compared to lefties, doesn't allow him to get that shape from leg stump (to the left hander) like he does from off stump (to the right hander).

Boult is much better suited than any Australian bowler to snicking off Ballance. I don't like Haze going around the wicket to him though.

Fuller length gave him less time to reset his feet.

Poor captaincy from Clarke not having someone at point for Root to begin with. A guy who stays perched on the back foot, and slightly leg side of it at times, he's naturally going to feed the ball through there.

Not sure how long he should be persevering with three slips with on this wicket either.
