Whoo!!!Manchester United FC. 2006/2007 English Premier League Champions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reckon this could be our last championship in about 10 season. Watch this space as Chelsea buy another million players. Good time to be a high profiled defender in football IMO.

The friendship that United and Real have historically shared is one of the nicer stories involving the two clubs. They are quite similar teams in stature and fan following, and how influential they are on their domestic circuit.

One can trace the root of the friendship all the way to the '57 European Cup semis, and the warm relationship between Santiago Bernabeu and Matt Busby. Having been beaten 3-1 in Madrid, Duncan Edwards & Co. played some great football for a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. The young Busby side earned high praises from the great Di Stefano side.

And just as Busby's babes looked set to take over Europe in '58, after winning the quarter final in Belgrade, the Munich air crash turned the dream into disaster. Following the semifinal loss to Milan, who were then beaten by Real in the final, Madrid offered the Cup to Old Trafford in a grand gesture.

If this offer was more symbolic, Barnabeu then went further by offering Di Stefano himself on loan to United for the next season. The move was blocked by FA since Di Stefano would be taking the place of a potential British player  Following all this, Real agreed to play a series of friendly games with the depleted United side which helped them to raise money, profile, and experience.

The story came to a glorious circle with United winning the '68 European Cup, on the way beating Real in the semifinal as a rampaging George Best ascended his zenith. Bernabeu said, “If it had to be anyone, then I am glad it was them".

The friendship may have thawed in recent times, especially following the arrival of Mourinho at Real, but what happened back in those days is a reminder of how clubs can operate with goodwill and honour.

A George Best interview from 2001

George Best: One-on-One | FourFourTwo

Back when you were a shag-magnet, did you ever feel empty or was it as awesomely good fun as I suspect?Jim McCulloch, Glasgow
[Laughs] Oh no, trust me, it was always good fun. That was one thing I never had problems with at all. How could I feel empty? I will always be grateful to have experienced the ‘60s and ‘70s. It was such an exciting time. The living was free and easy, and there were none of the diseases there are today. Life was about girls, a few beers, football, good music and being a shag-magnet! It was part of life and I loved every minute of it. I was never disappointed with ***. It’s like football – if you’re having a good game, you want to continue, and if you have a bad one, you just look forward to the next game!

Is there anyone who you think was a better footballer than you?

Richard Brown, via e-mail
In a recent survey of Manchester United fans, I came runner-up to Eric Cantona as the club’s greatest ever player, but I think that was just the kids talking. If you had asked an older generation then I probably would have won. I have always been mentioned in the same breath as Cruyff, Pele and Maradona, and that’s without ever having played in the World Cup. It is a big compliment that these players themselves recognise me too. I remember seeing some footage of Maradona completely freaking out when they asked him how good I was, and then, of course, Pele said he thought I was the greatest ever player. I have always thought I was the best ever player – that’s the way you have to look at it. I have never looked at another player and felt inferior.

What is the worst rollicking Sir Matt gave you?
Andy Brown, Urmston
It would have to be the time he told me to settle down with a nice girl, but when I did he went absolutely mad! I got engaged to this girl after only knowing her for a few weeks, and I thought he would be pleased that I had followed his advice, but he went nuts! He said, “How can you get engaged when you’ve only known her a couple of weeks!” I thought, “Well, you told me to!”

The past is a different country and all that.

This was pre-Twitter and Instagram, I suspect.

Always a little bit of a melancholy moment when I see a thread Craigos has posted in too. The poor, daft, splendid bugger. :(

I think my absence from this thread until now shows just how embarrassing it was
