Ha, this reminds me of what Uppercut said about Russell Brand in the thread in Off Topic. No doubt a lack of black managers is a serious and very real issue, but:

Misrepresenting a cause with logically bankrupt arguments can be the most effective way to devalue it.
So yeah, the fact that we have John Barnes and Ian Wright shooting their mouths off about this is probably doing more harm than good. It amazes me that Barnes himself cannot perceive of the fact that his frankly woeful track record might have something to do with the fact that he is unemployable.

On the subject of John Barnes, he ranked in at #12 in a rather depressing list I saw: outfield England players with the longest careers (in terms of time from debut to last cap).

Depressing because Michael Carrick comes in at four.

Anyone care to guess the three ahead of Sir Michael (the knighthood's surely only a matter of time)?

Robson? Beckham would've been a fair bit I guess too. Charlton should be up there (think he was about 58-70 at least)

As Sledger alluded to, there is some validity to the argument about black managers. But they don't apply to Barnes. Not many would have got a second chance after the job he did at Celtic. Another paper pointed out, of the last five managers at Tranmere, three never got another managerial role again after being sacked, one never managed in the football league again and the other has found work but was sacked for non footballing reasons. None of those guys are black, though.

I thought Barnes did an excellent job at Celtic.

Rio debuted reasonably early I seem to remember. Maybe Fat frank too?
Rio comes in at #6 (13 years and 7 months) and, yes, Arbuckle is one of the three ahead of Carrick in second with a career spanning 14 years and 9 months.

David James must be ranked fairly highly I imagine.
Not strictly an outfield player, tbf...

The chap at #1 is waaaay out on his own and famed for his extreme footballing longevity.

It'll be Sir Stanley Matthews then.
Indeed so. 23 years and 8 months elapsed from his debut to his last cap.

Fair to say it'll never be beaten.

If Carrick is select for Euro 2016 he'll be comfortably in second tho. God, that's just so wrong.

If Rooney were to actually keep himself fit (stop laughing at the back) he could conceivably challenge it.

He should actually finish his career comfortably in number 2, there's no reason why his international career shouldn't last at least another 5 years.

Apart from the fact that he's barely getting in now?
