Well, what can i say? I really feel for my kiwi friends
The comforts of home perhaps clouded a lot of peoples judgement. They'd been riding on a crest of a wave before the world cup and as we all know confidence is everything in a team sport. But the truth is they were performing the actual sum of their parts and that was down to three men. Mccullum, Southee and Boult. Granted, Elliot had a good spell and Guptil got that big knock but in the main it was those three who carried the kiwis to the final along with some well organised fielding.
So they reach the final and i guess they would have been up for it knowing they won the previous game against the Aussies but instead of actually trying to replicate what they did before they bottled it and decided to try and bat first. Had they have bowled first i have no doubt that the Aussie batsmen would have bee jittery because they got rolled over by the NZ attack before....so imo that was the first mistake. In hindsight though beating the host nation in a final is a very tough task of which only two teams have accomplished!!..India in the champions trophy in a reduced game...and of course THE MIGHTY West Indies on THREE different occasions.
Anyway a couple of others things to note is.
1. Williamson had a lot of hype around him going into this world cup but from day one the lad wasn't comfortable and tbh got a little found out.
2. Milne did ok but looks like he'll always be an injury waiting to happen if he keeps bowling at that speed too much.
3. Spin option was still a problem and looks like it will remain an issue now Dan is calling it a day
4. Guptil still has technical flaws
5. The team realise too much on Mccullum and if we're being honest the guy is merely a slasher these days like Chris Gayle...brilliant when it comes off but more often than not it doesn't and playing with that attitude was very costly today
6. Ronchi was another disappointment having had a great spell last year
7. Boult and Southee are brutal when they are "leading from the front" so to speak...but very rarely do you see them turn a game on its head when the game is slipping away from NZ
It's a shame they couldn't join the exclusive club of teams who have lifted the world cup but hey ho!!!..as the great Tupac Shakur once said "that's just the way it is".
As for my Aussies friends ...congratulations lads!!.. home advantage, perfect preparation with England and India playing them before the series etc...not sure that team would win in Asia but in these conditions and the pacers running in like that they are very tough to beat and i suspect it will remain the case in the next Champions trophy in England.
So they've done very well and inch further away from India and WI in the world cup tally...now all they've got to do is win a t20 world cup aswell like those two
