McCullum has been an amazing Great General this game and won numerous wars through his "Near general bonus". Unfortunately got killed 400 turns in and looks like Australian Great General Clarke will annex vital luxury resources and finish this war quickly.
how did i miss this

An amazing win for Australia, start of a new era for NZ. Didn't expect this WC to be so awesome. The best team won...

Found the build up to the game hilarious after the Hayden article. The Kiwis weren't villagers out in the city seeing sky scrapers ffs. They are professional cricketers and were a strong side. Warne, being Warne, continued about it in the pre game that most of the Kiwis haven't been in the MCG. Ganguly rightly rubbished that would have a huge impact.

While there is a tendency to believe it being in the MCG played a huge role, it wasn't the biggest factor. The Kiwis were relaxed before and during the game and lost on the day v an Aussie side which played far better. I wish they had given a better fight, but that's how it rolls at times. Usually, finals are one sided and sadly this one went the same.

Congrats Australia. Champion team. Proved that yet again. Well played NZ the whole tournament. Two best teams in the final. Aussies just too good.

Well, what can i say? I really feel for my kiwi friends

The comforts of home perhaps clouded a lot of peoples judgement. They'd been riding on a crest of a wave before the world cup and as we all know confidence is everything in a team sport. But the truth is they were performing way above the actual sum of their parts and that was down to three men. Mccullum, Southee and Boult. Granted, Elliot had a good spell and Guptil got that big knock but in the main it was those three who carried the kiwis to the final along with some well organised fielding.

So they reach the final and i guess they would have been up for it knowing they won the previous game against the Aussies but instead of actually trying to replicate what they did before they bottled it and decided to try and bat first. Had they have bowled first i have no doubt that the Aussie batsmen would have been jittery because they got rolled over by the NZ attack before....so imo that was the first mistake. In hindsight though beating the host nation in a final is a very tough task of which only two teams have accomplished!!..India in the champions trophy in a reduced game...and of course THE MIGHTY West Indies on THREE different occasions.

Anyway a couple of others things to note is.

1. Williamson had a lot of hype around him going into this world cup but from day one the lad wasn't comfortable and tbh got a little found out.

2. Milne did ok but looks like he'll always be an injury waiting to happen if he keeps bowling at that speed too much.

3. Spin option was still a problem and looks like it will remain an issue now Dan is calling it a day

4. Guptil still has technical flaws

5. The team realise too much on Mccullum and if we're being honest the guy is merely a slasher these days like Chris Gayle...brilliant when it comes off but more often than not it doesn't and playing with that attitude was very costly today

6. Ronchi was another disappointment having had a great spell last year

7. Boult and Southee are brutal when they are "leading from the front" so to speak...but very rarely do you see them turn a game on its head when the game is slipping away from NZ

It's a shame they couldn't join the exclusive club of teams who have lifted the world cup but hey ho!!!..as the great Tupac Shakur once said "that's just the way it is".

As for my Aussies friends ...congratulations lads!!.. home advantage, perfect preparation with England and India playing them before the series etc...not sure that team would win in Asia but in these conditions and the pacers running in like that they are very tough to beat and i suspect it will remain the case in the next Champions trophy in England.

So they've done very well and inch further away from India and WI in the world cup tally...now all they've got to do is win a t20 world cup aswell like those two :D .

Faulkner is really terrific for the balance of the side. Watson isn't bowling well at all or getting younger. Faulkner is a very useful cricketer. Have never been a fan of bits and pieces players and it is becoming more and more difficult to hide bits and pieces players in odis now. Faulkner is a fair bit more than bits and pieces though, which is why he should survive in the odi side for a while.

Sigh.

Was such an anticlimax. I'd been feeling reasonably confident all week - not necessarily confident that we'd win, but confident that we wouldn't get overawed by the occasion and would put up a good performance. We've been in pressure situations a number of times in the last two years and performed, but here we folded. Taylor and Elliott (wafg, his innings was brilliant) fought so hard to get us through to a decent position and to collapse the way we did was so disappointing, yet it had an air of inevitability about it when Taylor got out. Overall it's been a brilliant World Cup for us, but right now I'm pretty gutted at how the final played out.

Australia bowled frigging ridiculously well though it must be said. Starc, Johnson and Hazlewood gave us nothing to hit, and looked like taking wickets with every ball, and while I think Faulkner's a hack he still performed when it mattered. Their batting was basically what we were expecting - while they had a few lucky moments it always looked fairly comfortable.

Am struggling to properly express my thoughts about the game so will finish with some bullet points to save any actual thinking:
- Shane Warne, Mark Nicholas etc. kindly **** off
- N Srinivasan, Giles Clarke and other ICC ***** kindly **** off
- Anyone saying that SA/some other team would have been better finalists kindly **** off
- Anyone using this result to say the NZ team is 'overrated' or some bull**** kindly **** off

Well played Australia.

That's not your finest effort ww by any stretch.

Well played Australia. I won't go on a rant about the sledging and send offs that is just part of playing Australia and really teams should use it as a reason to hate them and make sure they win.
I am deeply dissappointed and would have preferred we lost in the semi in some ways.
I thought the pitch was close to unplayable for the first 5-6 overs of our inning due to the steep bounce and that was a bit unfair for an ODI but again that is just sour grapes and to pay respect to Aussie I was really impressed with their bowling plans for each individual batsman especially Ross and Kane.
There were times when I was frustrated with Ross as if he had been batting as fast as Elliott we would have been right up with a good run rate, however given what happened after he went out he is entirely justified for batting with an sr of 60.
I would have been interested in seeing a few more replays of his dismissal and thought that process was a bit rushed though not cavalier.

I do think playing in front of that many people proved too much for many of our players. Kane is doing the right thing by playing in the ipl so he can get used to playing in front of big crowds.
Starc 8 overs 1-20 won the game.

Last comment - next time Kane play that hook shot when it is to the leg side of your head we needed the runs.
