Am I the only one who thought that Vettori had a good claim to motm? Its not all about statistics and I think he really turned the tide in the first innings.

Excellent game to watch despite ordinary batting from both teams. However, while Australia have no excuse at least the NZ tail got some awesome Stark yorkers.

Gob smacked by Williamson's match winning 6 as you've got to have balls of steel to back-away to the leg-side when 9 wickets down.

A lot of glum posts about nz's chances after this game.

I don't know why, Starc was just awesome and the only reason it was competitive. The aussie batting was as clarke said pathetic. They only had a good start because Southee bowled one of the worst opening spells of all time.

Aussie will struggle against our attack again because we are actually pretty damn good.

Apart from Starc the Aussie bowlers were actually pretty average. Johnson is still clearly out of form. Cummins is wayward and Haze is imo a bit overrated. Also don't expect great things from Faulkner when he comes back, atleast not straight away. He hasn't played for a bit and may still feel it for a few games.

I see no reason for NZ not to take confidence from this victory. Taylor won't miss a straight one like that again and Anderson and Ronchi will be disappointed with the way they got out. Our team can still score big runs. Starc can't be that awesome every day can he?

I'm still in doubt about cummins honestly. He's been all over the shop today, and probably got away with more than few short wide rankers just due to match situation.

Hopefully johnson comes good as well. Seems to have no good answer to a person using his feet against him, which is admittedly a rare sight.
I think Cummins should have opened to Macca with the ball angling in. Was surprised neither Starc nor MJ went around the wicket to him.

Very interesting take-aways from that game imo.

Vettori possibly deserves motm because he turned the game around. But it's difficult to ignore a bowler with a 5fer.

What nerves from Williamson!

Everything I came in here to say has been said ten times over:

1) Starc is the best ODI bowler in the world atm - check
2) Kane has balls of steel - check
3) Kane never should have taken that single - check
4) Elliot and Taylor are a worry - check

The only additional comments I want to add is that Corey Anderson was a point of difference in that match. He is one of the better all rounders in the comp. I knew he would stand up and contribute with the bat even if he did throw it away at the end. He is a fighter and is a real asset to the team. He also broke the partnership with his bowling.
At 7 wickets down it was time to sit on the edge of your seat. At nine wickets down it was time to stand up and jump up and down when Boult kept out those two deliveries. thank goodness they weren't yorkers.
High fives all around when the winning six was hit. Kane you beauty. Doing the city of Tauranga proud.
The blackcaps did not send a message today unfortunately. And that is a shame. Although on the other hand had we coasted to victory we would have been crushed under the weight of public expectations that we would win the whole thing that it would have been hard to perform so perhaps this 1 wicket victory is for the best.

My final comment (and this theory is a stretch so don't challenge it) is that Brendon's inning against England scared Australia and probably contributed to the victory today - I felt that Australia should have compromised when they were 4 wickets down and settled for 220 or 230. But they kept playing their shots because they were scared of Brendon's firepower and they were dismissed instead.
Even Finch I thought was a bit reckless in his inning and couldn't really figure out why he was trying to hit back to back sixes. Then I figured that maybe they thought they had to bat like that. If that was there assumption it was a bad one as mission one against the blackcaps is to see off the opening ten overs without damage.

And finally finally - Dan does not deserve to be man of the match due to his batting alone.

I don't think it's brendan, I think the australian batsmen are rusty as ****. Just tentative shots and bad shot selection.

Nah, I know people like to over-exaggerate after a loss but I'd back them to come good.

Though if you just look at the way we got out it's not been by trying to bat aggressively, other than Finch and watson. Warner played down the wrong line, smith tried to go inside out to a ball on off stump, clarke read the length wrong with the drive, maxwell got too committed to the line with a ball that's still swinging, marsh is too tentative with leaving the ball, etc. etc.

They play that way anyway tbh. I think the pressure just got to them, crowd was probably a big factor in that.

Clarke's shot was needless. A leave may have been better at that stage. Which was my point about setting their sites lower and just settling for 230ish. You might not call a backfoot drive aggressive but it is an attacking shot.

Just how good was this game? When I refreshed cricinfo this morning and it said NZ 152/9 I assumed Aus were about to be finish off a pummelling.

It was a very interesting shot with that field set

Like I said, rusty. Hopefully we (especially clarke, seeing that he had not had any substantial batting for ages) get more match preparation before the knockout stages.

By aggressive I guess I meant slogging. It was more of a push than a drive, though that may be because smith tried to reign it back once he realised he was playing down the wrong line.
