Okay, so it's just starting absolutely bucketing down with rain here in Auckland.

Hopefully it's just getting it out of it's system a day early.
Yep, forecast is all clear. :)

It says heavy and thundery showers today (and that one was a doozy), but fine and sunny all day tomorrow.

It really is because of speed. Johnson and Starc would be toothless if they only bowled 135-140. The way they bowl is hugely dependent on speed.

Broad is the same, he's far better when he's bowling 145kmph +
Contrary to what people think but starc is honestly a swing bowler, especially with the white ball. He's really not your bang it in type like Johnson or broad. I dunno if he can generate his late swing at a lower pace but if he can I'd say that he would definitely not be useless at the 135 to 140 range. The fact that he can do it at 145 is what makes him lethal with the white ball.

Also has a really good Yorker.

Definitely has the best yorker I've seen for some time. Obviously helps when you're 6'6 or thereabouts..

Starc is a swing bowler. Johnson is their only true pace and bounce bowler.

The Black Caps are leading the poll. I'm pretty sure there are more Kiwis than Aussies on this site but still, we're looking like we're in with an excellent chance.

If we beat Aussie it really will be time to Dream Big New Zealand.

I do believe we can win this one, but I'm not sure I'd feel the same way if we ended up facing them in the final at the MCG.

If Baz and Kane get good nuts early we're a big chance of being rolled. Guppy and Ross still aren't fluent enough imo.

That kind of plays into Ross' style though. He's at his best when we're on the ropes early and he's allowed to take his time.
Agree, Ross is at his best when our backs are against the wall...If he comes in at 200/2 in the 34th over, he'll likely scratch around for 11 off 19 before being caught at deep mid wicket off a top edge. Elliott is similar, but to a lesser extent.

Hmmm, would have preferred Haze to play. Cummins from what I've seen isn't suited (yet) for ODIs. Additionally, the control Haze can provide complements Starc and Johnson's bowling. Oh well. Bailey dropped for Clarke, pretty expected.

Think NZ will win this, not sure which team to support, love both of 'em.

Yeah it's a tough call on Haze and probably a surprise to some. For those who have been watching Cummins this past few months it's important to note the number of Australian summers (and thus any sort of extended match bowling) he has missed. Three seasons in a row, and he's finally on the park for this one. Damien Fleming was at a lunch in Melbourne a while back and when asked about Cummins, he said he came away from the academy thinking this kid might be the most talented bowler -ever-. The insane pace, with all the control, but also the acumen to deconstruct techniques and create dismissals, Warne-like, which he had never seen in a fast bowler before (McGrath included). He was basically like this is the one guy where the cliche of saying "he's a bit similar to this all-time great in this respect, and this one in another" is actually appropriate. He is not alone in this opinion.

I mean, that's extraordinary praise, but it gives an idea of the impression Cummins must have made internally and why he keeps making squads and XI's when externally it may look like others should be ahead in the pecking order. His control was not there earlier in the summer, which was the big indicator to me that although his body is feeling good, the rhythm and continuity wasn't accounted for yet. He has also been a few clicks down on pace.

I've been following with keen interest ever since those extraordinary comments from Fleming - he's a prominent face in the media but an astute observer and not taken to throwing those sorts of claims around. But mainly, I just want to see exciting players on the park and hope this kid does well for himself.

Starc is not exactly a metronome though, he bowls a lot of pies too. The beauty of Starc is he bowls a ton of unplayable balls as well. He can be easily as wayward as Johnson can be. If Starc bowled 135-140 the batsman would have more time. He would not bowl as many unplayable balls and he'd get despatched easier.

Just my opinion though.

To be fair on starc while he can bowl quite a lot of pies it's mostly when he's trying to find some swing when there's not a lot on offer, so he can serve you some really rank half volleys when he does that. He can actually be pretty accurate as he does in the death.
