it's mark nicholas, and as i say all the time we'll never get more than backhanded complinments from 95% of the media. who cares. file it away and savour the delicious tears after we destroy them.

"We've got Mitchell [Starc] and Josh [Hazlewood] who have been swinging the ball consistently and they're 10kph faster. So our blokes are well prepared for that sort of stuff, and our blokes move their feet pretty well."

Quote from McDermott in relation to Southee and Boult in an article which annoyed me. I bet you Boult will bowl quicker than Josh tomorrow.

They keep going on about having 4 bowlers who can bowl 150 clicks. Maybe it's just the media. I rate Pattinson more than Hazle.
Yeah I heard Lehmann earlier in the week saying how McCullum will find it a much different prospect smashing his 145-150 km bowling attack than with Broad & Anderson.

Someone should send him the footage of McCullum destroying Tait when he was bowling between 150-155Kms. McCullum does have weaknesses in his game, but I don't think facing 'express pace' is one of them.

Tbf, the 95% thing is only relevant to the Aussie media....everyone else is really talking this up as 2 relatively even sides.

Unless he is bowling faster now but @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n9LP1wEW80 he is bowling 135 - 140 and all the videos I have watched of Starc shows he is bowling late 130's - 145. So yeah sounds like posturing to me.

Starc has cranked it up to 150 before but like all this pace stuff it's quite irrelevant.

You only have to ask Sri Lanka and England to know that if there is a better bowling attack it's probably NZ's. Some direct quotes to that effect.

Yeah, McCullum and Taylor are the best two players of genuine pace in the side, I don't have too many concerns about how he'll cope (not saying that he'll smash'em, just don't think he'll struggle with the pace either). The really interesting thing will be to see how Kane copes. He hasn't been exposed to this sort of speed since the 2012/13 tour of SA when the results were pretty mixed (a solitary hundred in an ODI where Steyn was rested, and not much else to shout about).

Australia's pace attack is better but it's not because of speed.

Hazlewood is generally 135-140, but can hit 145ish when hes going well. Similar to Southee and Boult, but on average would be slower than Boult.

Starc can hit 150 occasionally but usually bowls 142-147ish,

The Mark Nicholas preview article.

"Can NZ's momentum beats Australia's talent? " - He clearly doesn't rate NZ as being very talented. If Australia do have an edge in the talent stakes, it's not by as much as he would have people think.

Has the guy actually been keeping up with the likes of Williamson & Taylor in terms of their ODI rankings?

Everyone brings up strengths of each teams, Seam bowling and aggressive batting. One area that's no contest is spin bowling. Surely Aussies 5th/6th bowler is a massive weakness, and will have a massive target all over it for the BC's.

Marsh although a good bowler, won't have the Kiwis shaking in their boots. Twatto too. Maxwell, watch out my friend.

I suspect our top order will target their quicks. If baz and guptill last 10 overs i think theyll put up serious runs.

Anyone else have a nagging feeling we'd have a better chance against Australia if we were playing at either Hagley or the Cake-tin?

We really don't have a great recent record at Eden Park & I can't help feel the short straight boundaries will negate the one clear advantage we do have...that being Vettori.

Additionally, if it is the sort of wicket that the fast men are better to bowl short on once the swing is gone..that's an area Australia are better at than us. Remember this was the only ODI match India didn't lose on their last tour as well.

Same could be said if we make the Semi final there too.

I get that Eden Park was the obvious choice for the semi with the 40,000 capacity, but I'm not sure this is our best ground by any means..

Just hope I'm wrong on all this.

It really is because of speed. Johnson and Starc would be toothless if they only bowled 135-140. The way they bowl is hugely dependent on speed.

Broad is the same, he's far better when he's bowling 145kmph +

Okay, so it's just starting absolutely bucketing down with rain here in Auckland.

Hopefully it's just getting it out of it's system a day early.

I agree in the main, although there's no doubt in my mind that Starc is better than anyone we have at the death & I don't think that's purely because of his extra pace.
