We're up against it but great to see Hay, Bruce and Dougeh stand up against a solid attack. Mathieson at the end too. Robinson broke his leg fielding :/

Wagner is having fun and Raval tonned up. Hira got another golden.

An interesting round so far.
Bar Kuggs and he's nothing great this is a piss poor bowling attack IMO.

How the spinners go in this season Plunket Shield shoud be fascinating.
With a late summer Plunket season, they could be the difference, but then again this is NZ......

Of the spinners - Nethula currently with the best average, Astle with the most wickets.

With 5 seamers in the World Cup squad (plus Bennett currently missing), as well as the batsmen in the world cup squad. Those disciplines are very impacted by the quality of the players taken out.

But the spinners are only missing Vettori (who never plays PS anyway) and white ball specialist N McCullum.

5 of the 6 provinces have spinners who are pretty good at this level, or at least interesting to see how they go in probably more spin firendly conditions:
Auckland - Nethula
ND - Sodhi/Santner
Wgtn - Patel
Cant - Astle
Otago - Craig

Only CD with real spinning weakness (A Patel looks ok but inexperienced)

Grobelaar undone by an Astle google on 99. Through the gate.

and Hira's dismissal has got to be one of the unluckiest I have ever seen, especially for a golden duck (btw, video incorrectly load against Dawson if you want to look it up)

CANTERBURY vs AUCKLAND ACES

Crazy how Hira now doesn't bowl, opens the batting and tries to smash everything. It's been a long road but he's basically come full circle and is now the same cricketer I remember from primary school.

For lack of a better place to discuss this, it turns out that New Zealand's IPL players will be flying in to England just 2 days prior to the start of the first test - which means we can pretty much right that one off now given that our IPL players now comprise nearly half of our first choice test XI. Apparently New Zealand may have to ask local county sides to provide players to fill in for their warm-up matches.

This is a real shambles, and one that will likely ruin what was otherwise shaping up to be an extremely entertaining little series.

I agree it's not ideal, but money does makes the world going around, so it's a commercial reality. Most of those players are mentally strong & should be able to adapt to the quick turnaround, even if 1-2 practice games would be the ticket, particularly early summer in England.

Unfortunately NZ cricket don't have the financial negotiation muscle to compromise and/or compensate to free those players earlier than that.

I'm not sure about the individual IPL contract conditions; Whether the sell price is pro-rated based on the number of games one is available for and can be negotiable further with compensation provided or whether the exit date is set in stone in advance & is non-negotiable.

I'm guessing the former if it was Australian cricketers.

well if we lose the first test they will rightly be dragged over hot coals by the public.
Yeah I can envisage a public outcry if we lose, but I can see NZ cricket merely shrugging their shoulders in response & claiming there wasn't much they could do given the small IPL window is about the only time NZ players can earn really good money.

This sucks. The most interesting part of the tour now will actually be the warm up games. Will be like an A tour. .

That's farcical. Like when the Windies arrived before the series in NZ in 2013 and had to use locals for their warm up game.

McCullum, Oram, Mills & Vettori played pretty well in the first test after arriving late for the 2008 series. Although they at least arrived before the last two warm up games.

Will be tough for Boult & Southee in particular to get accustomed to bowling for a test match with the Duke ball.

That article is a little off though, pretty sure Lincoln doesn't offer Quantity Surveying.. Or land Surveying.

You can do QSing at any decent Polytech, and Land Surveying is normally done in Dunners.
