Haha Bidwell, trying to paint it as though the young players are pussies despite this player drain being limited to Wellington and this generation of young players contributing to international success.

The likes of Duffy (action), Small (injuries) and Verma (injuries) have had numerous cricketing setbacks and they're still determined to make it.

NZC need to give them an ultimatum - grow your own players instead of raiding other countries for club cricketers or become a Hawke Cup province supplying players to Central Districts. The Firebucks would be a tragedy, but one Wellington deserve.

And fire Siddons immediately after the champions league.

edit: actually CD won't want them. They don't need to have players come in with expertise at losing from any position of strength.

Another young player loses faith with Firebirds | Stuff.co.nz

Not surprising. Wellington keep shooting their own foot with juniors it seems. I hope Patel, Franko, Papps Mckay, Gillespie, Arnel and maybe even Woodcock move on next season. I bet you Siddons would be on the phone to other seasoned average players to fill the gap..
Absolutely gutting. Can't say I'm surprised though - I'd been hearing rumours to this effect all season.

If he'd left the firebirds to study his absolute passion you might write it off as just a young kid following his dream. But, with apologies to the surveyors out there, quantity surveying doesn't strike me as something kids really aspire towards.

I also doubt it's a money thing. A contract and some odd jobs is pretty well off for a kid out of school, and the potential prospect of an IPL contract in a few yes must've been considered an outside chance for an aggressive batsman who played age grade cricket for his country.

There are two provinces in NZ that if I was a young player I would get as far away from as possible - Auckland & Wellington.

I wonder if NZC need to go down the English system by offering bonuses to provinces whose players graduate to national honours.

That hurts bro.. Na seriously, read my last post. You don't need to move away from Welly to study Quantity Surveying. Sounds like a excuse for him to get out of the place to me.

Hutt Valley and Wellington City need to play in the Hawke Cup again. Not sure when they last played, but I think they've been defunct for years. No surprises that some of these recent graduates to the CD team have played relatively well when they've had games for Manawatu, Taranaki, Hawke's Bay or Wairarapa - that has to be a more effective bridge to first class cricket than plonking some young'un in direct from the top grade Wellington cricket.

Hutt last played Hawke Cup back in 1997 by the looks of things.

I agree with this entirely. More games at the Basin then as well, you'd hope.

An excellent idea.

It's always going to be an issue where you have reasonable established players and trying to find room for promising new players. Other players from that 2012 Under 19 team, like Sodhi, Horne & Fletcher have left Auckland.

Thinking back players like Greatbatch & Matt Horne had to leave Auckland to get an opportunity at first class level.

Wellington City, I imagine, were removed from the Hawke Cup for similar reasons as Dunedin Metro - they ended up being pretty much a Provincial A team. I agree that Hawke Cup cricket is a good bridge between club stuff and the next level but, having played a fair bit of both Hawke Cup and A's, they're far better off trying to organise more A cricket. Wellington A played Canterbury A the other week. They need to be doing more of that throughout the season, and probably change the format of nationals a bit so that it's not all limited overs stuff. CD, and to an extent ND, are a bit of an aberration because the quality of their Hawke Cup comp is unusually high due to the nature of their constituent provinces.

2 years ago they had a Tararua Cup. Wgtn city, Hutt, Manawatu, Wairarapa.

Just 50 over stuff.

In fact, IIRC, Henry Walsh went berserk v Wairarapa and got his firebirds call up straight after.

Cricket: Fast bowler's move north is a winner - Sport - Northern Advocate News

Andrews, who also plays for Northland and Northern Districts A, ripped through the Zest Insurance Whangarei Boys' High School batsmen with a performance sure to keep him in Northern Districts selectors' minds.

From interview with ND coach James Pamment:

"There's good young bowlers coming through our districts - Tony Goodin and Cody Andrews are young bowlers who I think can make the transition to first class cricket in the next couple of years."

Yay! Plunket Shield again today. The schedule of this comp has been slowed down to match the snail pace of the CWC. Seems like a week between last round finishing and thus one starting.

and still no Sodhi. Hard to get any non-CWC news.

Bugger, these 7 consecutive FC games could have seen Sodhi make huge strides, especially as he has been having a good domestic season so far.

Canterbury Country in the Hawke Cup actually look quite good on paper. I actually recognise more names in their lineup than Manawatu.

Good to see Michael Mason and Shannan Stewart playing this level.

Also surprised that Dane Cleaver hasn't cracked the CD Plunket Shield lineup. Considering they have lost How, Noeama, and now Robinson.

Can't complain about Bruce and Hay in those middle order spots though, have done well.

Surprising depth?
