A nice surprise, Eranga and Kula showing their class, this attack has a bit more confidence defending big runs it seems

Ponting played for 17 years vs Sanga's 15 - really not much of a difference.

Both have very similar overall career records, so I don't think Sanga being relatively average early in his career means much.
Comparing them a bit further, Ponting had a better early career and Sanga clearly has had the better late career.
Sanga was only average (he made 29 at 70) till 2004, since then he's averaged 45 with a SR of 80 over 300 ODIs..

The ODI batting comparison graph shows the career progression differences well:

The leg spinner, Prassana, looks like a good one-day bowler. I like Jeevan Mendis but judging from that one game Prassana looks the better bowler for OD cricket.

He went for runs in the Eng series.. they are both pretty unreliable with the ball tbh.. Prasanna is a straight slogger and Jeevan can make a relatively quick 15 or so reliably.

I think we could have won the last ODI. Even with the one wicket in hand, Mills was striking the ball well and McClenaghan is no mug with the bat either. We needed 36 off 30 which should have been comfortable to get.

Has been a great thread and series boys. See you all in the WC.

The odis have got me thinking henry is our second best odi pacer and charmander and eranga should be in sr lankas squad.

Someone tell guptill to just go for it. We all know what he can do. Make the game plan to go from both ends then kane and ross can knock it around or play fix up.

One thing I liked about yesterday's game was how confident and determined Corey Anderson looked when Williamson got out. He really believed and wanted to get us over the line.

It wasn't to be but it's good to see he's got that confidence in his game.

My last post for this thread.

Firstly the positives

1) Kane's form
2) Ronchi, Anderson and Elliot in the middle
3) Good come back bowling after SL looked to crack 300 a few times
4) Vettori back to his miserly best and also contributing with the bat
5) Anderson's bowling

The negatives
1) Guptil's form - he should just go out and start smashing it
2) Taylor's form - this is the most worrying. He is too good a player to continue playing poorly like this. He's had some bad luck but when you're out of form the bad luck seems to compound things

It's been an excellent series and played in good spirit. SL will by no means be easy beats in the WC. In fact they are battle hardened and have settled in to playing well in NZ conditions. This will help them a lot.

A bit of a trainwreck tour at times but with the WC approaching very quickly now there's a few encouraging signs, but some serious holes have also opened up which this win papers over a bit rather than truly resolves. The return of Kulasekara is really encouraging, he seems to have no form with the bat but his bowling really helps, with a fit Malinga one hopes the seam attack is shaping up fairly well. Herath also proved he can do the middle overs holding job to perfection, although we already knew that, the worrying sign was Senanayake, although I saw evidence in game 1 that he can do the business in the key overs, pretty confident our spinners can be relied on. The return of Matthews to the batting line-up will really help one feels, but the number 6 position is a bit of a problem, no one in the squad is able to play the role properly, I think the norounder should gives us handy contributions from no 7 at times, hopefully Kula moves up to 8 and this whole spin-bowling all-rounder business is done away with for the WC. Thirimanne at the top of the order has been a bit of a revelation, has some boundary hitting options with the field up and is solid enough to get through the first 15 overs, just needs to rotate the strike a little more to ease the pressure on himself which has been leading to his downfall recently, the opening partnerships have been great since he moved up and yesterday the team finally got some reward for their hard work at the top, shame Dimuth gets left in the squad though.

Sri Lanka could look at saying "right, **** the middle to lower order because they suck anyway, top four bat long" or you could swap Mathews and Chandimal in the order so Mathews can control the last ten overs at #6. Knee cap Karunaratne and replace him with the best specialist biffer you can find and drop Thisara. Prasad and Lakmal can bugger off as well.

Dilshan, Thiri, Sanga, Mahela, Chandiguns, Angelo, Sir Slogger, Kula, Herath, Senananannanaa, Malinga with God knows, who cares, Prasaana and Charmander on the bench.

Looks pretty good to me flem, although tbh I really don't think he have any biffers that'll actually do better than Thisara

This clearly shows that we need wicket taking bowlers. Thisara had been awful with both bat and ball. Don't think he justifies his place. Eranga, Kula, Prasad and Lakmal all bowl better with the new ball. Kule in addition can bowl at death. Given Malinga is not the best bowler at the top, inclusion of Eranga looks like a good idea with Prasad in back ground. Sri Lanka needs batsman, good old batsman who could play long innings. Never mind the SR, because we are collapsing big time in middle order. Time to bring in Upul Tharanga IMO.

My XIV (playing Xi in bold)
Dilshan, MJ, Thirimanne, Sanga, Tharanga, Chandimal, Mathews, Senanayake, Kule, Eranga, Malinga, Karunananayake, Herath, Prasad

Rather have Herath in for Eranga. Angelo to stop ****ing around bowl 6-7 a game at least. Since Tharanga isn't happening I guess replace him with Thisara - as useless as he is with the ball, he's the only "reliable" six-hitter SL has aside from Angelo.

The middle order won't be as much of a problem with Matthews at 6, and the bowling won't be such an issue one hopes when Malinga is back and both Senanayake return to the side
