I laughed my balls off at the KFC jibe.

Good win to the BCs, always going to be a nightmare chasing 361 and also nice to see Boult show why he was picked.

Off topic, didn't realise Elliott was quite so tall, looked about the same as Doully in that interview.

My wife is only a casual follower of cricket, but her response was "isn't he a Pacific Islander? Oh my God that is so racist."
The only people affected by racial stereotypes are the ones who have this reaction. Taylor has said many times in interviews that his favourite food is KFC. Scott Styris, as a former team mate of his, would know how much of a fan of the Colonel's secret recipe Rossco is, hence his comment.

Well it's her interpretation of it that's racist not the comment itself. Tbf on your wife, she probably doesn't know that Taylor goes out of his way to joke about his love for KFC in just about every casual interview he does.

I'd say out of context it's racist, but as Ross is a self professed KFC true believer, it isn't in this case.

That said it's still a pretty stupid thing to say. Would you say the same about Dougie and a beer? Or Williamson and Dan's underpants?

Nah, I don't think Styris crossed the line at all with that one, it was just a well-timed reference & yes it would have been quite different referring to Dougie's love for beer or the fact Dan & Kane swapped undies.

In-jokes are a dangerous area in broadcast. God knows what Sri Lankan fans or an international neutral may have thought Styris meant.

Yeah I know, just thought that one was shy of the red-zone, because it can explained quite easily & it's hardly offensive. Will be interesting if the PC media brigade do pick up on it though.

I imagine most Sri Lankans, unaware of the racial stereotypes about polynesians and KFC, would've assumed that he meant that Taylor really likes KFC.

You are right about my wife. I have heard Taylor comment on KFC myself, but I still feel it cuts the line a bit. In the same way it is never okay for a white American to comment on a black American's love of water-melon - even if that black American genuinely does love the stuff - it is not really okay for a white New Zealander to comment on a Pacific Islander's love of KFC. It may be true, but it is usually only said to reinforce an existing racial stereotype.

Anyway, that is my last comment on the subject. I would hate to turn a discussion on a great win - where key "weak links" came right in spectacular style - into a debate on race relations in NZ.

May have just thought Styris was calling him fat. Or with the way stereotypes work, the KFC/polynesian link might be exactly what they thought. That isn't really the point.

The point is, it's not a clever thing to say on the one-way street of broadcast and he shouldn't do so again.

I see there are a few tweets about it already. I don't think any of us think Styris meant any malice but as a commentator you occasionally need to be aware of how the words you say can be interpreted.

Credit where it's due, Boulty did bowled well today. Surely Mills has to be given a run in the last 2 games, actually surprised he didn't play today.

It's tough to know how the McHessgar gang rank the 5 pace bowlers within the squad.

As of today I'm guessing their rankings would be,

Southee
Mills
Milne
McClenaghan
Boult

Obv much depends on how Mills looks on his return.
