On the Latham issue, not sure who would be in the squad instead. Watling comes to mind and maybe Brownlie, and both have SR issues. Ryder's absence was always likely to be felt.

What is with Baz and unsuccessful reviews?

Because no other ODI batsman has been batting outside their ideal positions, playing in the subcontinent & having to bat with different partners?

I mean you can keep repeating that he's talented like a mantra, and not sure anyone would disagree that he has talent. But at what point will you concede he's not quite ready to be a successful ODI batsman just yet? I mean 'actual achievement/performance' does count for something doesn't it?
Of course it does, but he's played 24 sparsely spaced ODIs during over 2 years (he was what, 19-20 for the first one?) playing a number of different positions.

The eyes trump that short and sparse of a record.

Holy heck Lakmal has bowled some absolute rippers for a guy who has 5.1 overs for 32.

Lol, I was sure Taylor played on there.

And now almost run out. Wake up Taylor ! give the man a coffee someone. (actually that might make it worse)

Not watching it live but is Taylor still looking squared up? He looked woeful at the crease during the tests.

Taylor, will his footwork be positive today? This will be interesting,
Don't think so. He appears horribly out of form and is playing all round is pads. Now Kane is out :-( The only consolation is the ball is still nipping around so there is a chance if we post a half decent score.

I suspect as the sun beats down on this wicket it will flatten considerably.

Yes, he's struggling big time playing around his pads all the time. He's a walking LBW or caught behind candidate. Pretty awful to watch as a Taylor fan :-(

KW human after all. Suppose this could've been a worse start if Lanka were more consistent early on.

Interesting to see how we go on without Kane holding fort at one end.

Taylor is a walking wicket at the moment and the remaining batsmen are all stroke players. The chances of a reasonable score are looking unlikely.

Still, this is the type of situation you want to be in with the WC around the corner. Put yourself into difficult situations and work a way out of it.

Can't remember when he last looked this scratchy. Probably the run-up to the 2011 World Cup until that innings at Palekelle.

We're going around in circles here.

Is he a talented/promising batsman? Yes, we all agree

Has he proven himself as a test batsman after a handful of chances? Yes, definitely

Has he proven himself as a ODI batsman after 23 innings? No, not only a poor average, but an extremely poor SR for the middle order

Could he possibly develop into an international quality ODI batsman in the future? Yes, possibly..and I'd even say probably.

Does the fact he's talented mean he's ready for ODIs now? No..no & no.

I'm sure those who kept selecting the likes of Michael Slater & Michael Vaughan as ODI batsmen for a period of time would have said something similar about the eyes trumping their performances for a while there.

I'm holding out hope that Latham won't ultimately be another Slater/Vaughan, but it's almost likely to do more harm that good to keep picking him when he's clearly not up to it.

Agree. But who would you have in the squad instead?

As a fringe player he should be getting maximum game time in this series though, sitting out won't do him any good.
