England thread

Tbf we'd had like a page of discussion about whether England had realistic chances of beating South Africa or not, so it wasn't that dumb assuming that it was a topic being reopened.

Just a random thought that passed my mind and am sure it won't be implemented but sending Broad as a pinch hitter should be considered. He is being wasted at 9 or 10 and has decent ability to bat. Wouldn't harm the Poms.

Neither him nor Woakes maximise their batting potential low in ODIs. Would probably rather Woakes used in that way though.

True. Felt the same about Swann, although he seemed to have deteriorated as a batsman the more games he played.

Broad batting 9 certainly makes more sense than Buttler batting 8 and Woakes batting 9 though. :p

"No chance" is an understatement tbh. SA look very brittle, and England have two bowlers capable of making them have a very bad day.
If Amla and DeVilliers (highly unlikely) happen to have a bad day, I can't see SA making more than 200. Anderson Vs Amla should be a very interesting battle.

That's usually the case when a pinch hitter is used. But if the plan comes off and Broad scores a quick 30-40 thats job done i suppose and the team benefits from it. Maybe they can use this ploy sparingly. But yea I don't see that happening.

It's weird how much of a specialist role batting late down in limited overs is. You'd think players like Haddin, Woakes and Broad would be decent at it but they're all pretty terrible.

Buttler is starting to worry me a little. The first australia game he played a poor knock and todays wasn't much better. I know it was a tough situation in the first game but he basically went completely into his shell and didn't seem able to release any of the pressure. He just looks from the outside to be short of confidence at present. He hasn't played that well in odi cricket since taking the test gloves imo.

All players go through form dips and problems with confidence especially at a young age and I have such high expectations for Buttler. He's done pretty well in his odi career so far but I actually kind of expected to have been doing better by now.

I love Ravi but **** I wish we had Billings coming in at 7. I know we would miss the vital 2 overs that Bopara provides but it would be so worth it.

Billings has had like three good months in his career. Granted they were impressive but there's no chance they could realistically select on the back of his form over such a short time. Would be interesting though if Ballance was ruled out or another bat was injured who'd they'd callup.
