Yeah agree with this. Realistically the young batting talent in New Zealand, ie the guys who have yet to play an international is pretty poor. Craig Cachopa is probably the best by a wee bit and even then he's always seemed like a proper flat track bully (like most Auckland batsman). Mitchell can't play spin for turd and Bracewell just looks like a big front foot plodder. I haven't seen much of Will Young but his stats don't suggest he's anything special at the moment either.

Somebody mentioned after the first test whether the standard of first class cricket had improved by so much that we were now seeing it's results bare fruit at the test level. It probably has over the past 10-15 years but I think New Zealand have just fluked some sort of talent boom. The 2008 and 2010 Under 19 World cup teams produced Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Kane Williamson, Corey Anderson, Tom Latham, Jimmy Neesham, Doug Bracewell. Guys like Adam Milne and Matt Henry couldn't even make the 2010 squad (and Milne was playing internationals by the end of that year). If you look at the teams from 2012 and 14 (hard to do with 14 obvs) it doesn't look as rosey.

I think Will Young 'looks' quite good, the most complete out of the young batsmen on the scene. In terms of the shots he possesses, front and back foot, and v pace and spin.

Needs to stop getting out so much ....

He has a Neesham-like liking for the aerial mid-wicket gap.

Actually probably needs to tighten up and hit less in the air in red ball cricket.

He's making scores in List A cricket now. It's not FC but hopefully it's a sign he's getting more adaptable and more importantly, more ruthless with converting his starts into meaningful scores.

He's always been good for a technically correct 30 or 40.

Wellington's best player of Milne was, surprisingly, Power Papps. Clipped him nicely off straighter lines, bravely brought out the front-foot power pull, which he predictably got off the bat stickers. Alecz from Sunshine Coast also wanted to show Milne his signature pull shot.

Glenn Phillips, yet another Howick Pak success story. Dead set certainty to at least play a lot of FC cricket, and very soon. He's a bloody gun. Keeps wicket and bowls handy off spin. Don't know much about Dale but I'll presume he's a superstar too. Brothers in law of Lord Don Grobbelaar

Wowowowowow. The bloke's only 18 and he's doing that.

Possibly a flat track bully at this stage of his career - and not been exposed to decent spin - but I wouldn't want to be bowling to him at Lincoln, or on any flat one around the country.

He's always been earmarked for big things has Glen Phillips. Remember hearing about how good he was when he broke into the Sacred Heart 1st XI at 13.

Will Young is a massive talent and is definitely one to keep an eye on. He is only 21 and is just starting his FC career but he is showing great signs. There is a lot of good coaches involved with CD so he will be sure to develop more over the coming 12 months, let's just hope the scores follow

He's only 22 now and if he debuts in a couple of years it will hardly be an eyebrow raising or late debut. Someone like Tom Latham would still be playing Shield cricket despite the numbers if he were a middle order batsman (see Bracewell, Michael). Taylor was 23 on debut iirc, Latham 21-22 and Jesse was delayed by him being silly. At the moment though Macewell would be first in line of the young guys. Hopefully we can get some Astle, Styris, Watling standard players from these guys.

Henry Nicholls? Had a lean 2nd season in FC cricket, but last season 555 FC runs @ 37 and this season 263 FC runs @ 43, 264 list A runs @ 66, 194 T20 runs @ 48. Anyone seen him play in the flesh?

Yeah ND do enjoy trying to produce bombs out of common household items, like Tyler Lortan. His maximums look like lower-order Northern Districts players want theirs to look. Dominates like agribusiness wants to dominate.
