I can understand why they might have wanted to drop Chandimal but what I don't get is why it was Dickwell they decided to pick in his place.
My only explanation is that Sanga vouched for him cos he liked him when he debuted and he played for his high school.. no real reason for this to happen otherwise.

Is Dickwella coming of a corker of a season in 4 day cricket, because if not, its impossible to justify him picked as a batman.

Surely their is better options in Lanka?

He averages 31 in FC cricket.

There's no explanation for this.. probably going to destroy his career prospects as a 21 year old.. mental scars etc.

Can someone give me an idea of how naming conventions for people work in Sri Lanka? There seem to be some interplay of first and surnames, and obviously a lot of initials in there.

Hashan Tillakaratne - Tillakaratne Dilshan
Kaushal Silva - Tharindu Kaushal

Are there patronymics going on here, or is this just simple interchange of surname/first name over time?

Oh I agree totally.

I can't find any scoreboards for 4 day domestic Sri lanka cricket, so was just curious if at least he had got some runs in his last few 4 day games, then its some sort of justification for picking him. If not then the selection is at best naive.

Tillakaratne is really not a first name. It makes sense though because his birth name was Tuwan Mohammad.. he changed his name to Tillakaratne Mudiyanselage (a plausible Sinhala Buddhist name) when he converted from Islam to Buddhism. From what I remember his father was Muslim and mother Buddhist.
Tharindu Kaushal has 2 first names. His full name is Paskuwal Handi Tharindu Kaushal. I'm not sure if Paskuwal is a last name but his case is rare.

He averaged 38 with one ton and two fifties in the main domestic comp last season.

Sri Lanka's domestic setup isn't great though so they like like to organise a lot of games for Sri Lanka A and development sides against other nations' equivalents. Dickwella's been a Sri Lanka A regular in the last year or two and has scored 118 runs in 6 games @ 13 for that side. Not joking.

That poor kid who dropped Karunaratne yesterday must be feeling pretty sick right now. Still, sounds like it was an awesome innings. Still the back of the SRL innings has been broken, and assuming we bowl well tomorrow morning we suould be aboe to rap this up smartly. Also, what a nice change to see the day's play finish before 6:30.

All over by lunch tomorrow? Yes imo.
Think it's odds-on to go past lunch. Can see SL putting on 100 for the last 5, setting NZ a target of 80-90 which will take them approx. to tea.

If they do somehow get a lead of 200, it could get dicey against their young spinner. The lad has quite a FC record already.

If they get a lead of 200, if they need their spinner to take wickets they'll have already lost IMO. They will desperately need to get 2 of Kane, Taylor or McCullum with the new ball. It's a sporting wicket but it's definitely easier to bat than it was on Day 1 or 2 atm. Will be a massive effort from Mathews to get them a lead of 200 from here.

Kaushal is fairly **** and Prasad is one of the worst 8s I've seen in recent memory.
