man i feel bad for the kid who dropped that catch. Should never have been out there, it's arrogant of the management really.
What do you mean, arrogant? Most other teams use up-and-comers rather than taking a top notch professional away from playing in domestic cricket. Maybe they could have selected someone who's a superb fielder at youth level, but given the additional pressures of an international match, there's no guarantees that it'd make any difference. Of course, we could sign up James Marshall as fielding coach and get him to field (I remember Trevor Penney fielding for England at one point when he was fielding coach) but taking away Guptill, for example, from playing for Auckland would be silly.

The sub fielder was Cole McConchie, wasn't it? He played in the tour match, so it's not as if they plucked some guy out of the crowd to field.

The complaint smacks of scapegoating.

What happened to the days of the 12th man fielding.

Also other teams usually pick some gun fieldsmen - like the guy who ran out ponting in the ashes many years ago.

What even happened to Brownlie today though, anyway. Seems he tried to drive from Christchurch to Alexandra and ****ed it up.

ND could send their 12th man Joe Carter on a mission to a) look for Brownlie and b) field in the rest of this Test.

So SL effectively made 222 in the first innings and get to bat again.. I think NZ would not have enforced the follow on if SL had actually made 222 in the first innings, so the morning session could make things slightly more interesting.. the problem SL has is that the McCullum innings has ensured that there is no way they can save this test with 3 full days left, only possibility is to go for 500+ and a last day chase on a crumbling pitch. That said, without Herath and the batsmen unlikely to make much more than ~300-400, this match is as good as over.

Even an established first class cricketer is gonna be ****ting their pants being on the field in front of 10000 people for the first time in their life. The substitute fielder should be a player who's played in front of a crowd before and isn't going to have first time jitters. It's arrogant to use the position to "give him some experience" when there's a very real chance of that player influencing the game.

Nice Timster! Just as I was about to post that I think it will be Southee's day today. Hasn't quite had the luck of his fellow bowlers in recent times, picking him for a 5-fer today.

I like Dimuth Karunaratne. Very far from a top quality player and good bowlers work him out but he always seems up for the challenge.

As impressive as McCullum's batting average going up has been, so too has Southee's bowling average going down been amazing. Just a few wickets away from dropping under 30, and if he can show all these variations he's going to be an absolute fiend.

Jesus. Boult is just getting better and better isn't he. Pace is right up there too, 143k pretty much that entire over.
