Keep thinking Wheeler is going to start to dominate for CD at FC level but he hasn't yet. I haven't had much time to follow closely but it seems every time he and Bracewell have played together this season and last, Bracewell ends up with comfortably better figures. I've always liked the look of Wheeler (height, bounce, shape, a bit of pace) so wondering what's stopping him from kicking on.

In other news, Bond likes Milneh.
New Zealand bowling coach Shane Bond proud of new speedsters | Stuff.co.nz

"There are definitely a few [similarities]; a couple of things in the action, the run-up, the pace and probably the injuries as well," Bond said.

"When you look at Adam compared to me, he's bowling like he is at 22 and he's a far superior athlete than I was.

"By the time he gets through the injury issues he may be 23-24 and have a long 10-year career in front of him because he's so fit.

"It's good to watch him and it's nice to be working with someone who can perhaps learn off my experience and mistakes."

Bond said the fear factor was a key with Milne.

They were shelling a few in the slips off Wheeler, but yeah Boult would've never taken anything like 0/150 in those conditions. Wheeler's usually surprised me with the sheer inaccuracy of his new ball spells, considering he always looks like he's trying to be calm and measured. I'm yet to see him get his pitch map and release as good as it was, back in the days before he'd transformed his physique and was down at around 125kph.

Watched Sodhi's boundaries on the vid scorecard, a lot of them were edges through the slips, 4 of the boundaries in a row were catchable looking edges off Jacob Duffy, plus 2 off Wagner.

Sodhi looks really good v spin (like in Bangladesh last year and UAE thus year) and good against pace/seam when over pitched (strong when playing straight down the ground) , but still a bit dodgy to good length seam bowling.

Michael Bracewell now averages 40 in FC after his latest ton ftr. 2000+ runs, 6 tons and an average of 40.37 from 34 games and he's only 23. Hurricane might be tasting it yet.
Hesson has a bit of time for Redmond too obvs, but you'd think it might be an idea for Macewell to actually open the batting in our domestic cricket somewhere.

"Don't do it, Dimitri. Maintain that strong left-right combo. We want Macewell to improve his play of spin, anyway" - Hesson

Oh I forgot hesson's roots.

Bracewell would make a better opener than a number three anyway. His flaws in his ball striking mean that it will be difficult for him to dominate an attack as a number 3 4 or 5 should be able to. However because of his compact backlift he takes some degree of error out of his game which could see him do well against a new ball attack.

He will always be someone who gets out when set yet a consistent starter again marking him down as a good opener where consistency is a virtue. Like everyone else he will need a big double to press his claims. I can see him doing that.

A little video for Straw Man of the classic Wheeler peach, followed by the common Wheeler dud.

I've often felt that Wheeler doesn't quite get side on enough when he's not bowling well, when you compare it to his more consistently good spells. Maybe I should ask Gazza to pass the message on. :p

Thanks, I'd assumed he was probably more inaccurate than I'd seen. Based on just the impressive wicket-balls he's bowled I would have expected him to average more like Henry does at FC level, but he's several runs higher. Agree with you too that his action looks like it should be very repeatable. Hope he's getting some good coaching - wonder if Bond still has anything to do with CD.

It always used to amaze me how many top bowlers could generate pace and accuracy with very front-on actions - has always looked unnatural to me, but it seems to work for them.

Oh yeah, front on actions absolutely do work for some bowlers. I'd never advocate trying to get Wheeler to change his action just because it didn't look pure to me. My point was just that when he is bowling well he does seem to be more side-on. When he gets too front on, it doesn't seem to work for him as well -- surprisingly keeps his wrist position and therefore swing, but sprays it.

Bowling front on is a very efficient way of maintaining pace because you don't waste energy rotating your body unnecessarily, you just transfer you run-up straight into the bowling arm. In my experience what this does is make it difficult to incorporate the front arm into the action, therefore maybe messing with consistency. [/talkingoutofass]

I wish NZC would get an external contractor to host their video highlights. At what point do you give up checking to see if the video is updated yet to the scorecards?

I see CricHQ did a trial of a live stream of a Karori club match. Might be promising.

So Kitchen will play the two-dayer against Sri Lanka, rather than O'Donnell.

O’Donnell comes into the 12 to replace Craig Cachopa who has been ruled out due to an injury to his shin.

Cricket: How draws stumps - Sport - NZ Herald News

Long serving former international batsman Jamie How is to retire from all cricket.

How will step aside from Central Districts after the one-day Ford Trophy competition ends on February 1.

How played 19 tests, 41 ODIs and five T20s for New Zealand is to take up a fulltime role with Toyota New Zealand.

"These are never easy decisions to make but the time has come to embrace an opportunity outside cricket," How said.

His career has spanned 15 years, perhaps highlighted by a terrific 139 against England in an ODI in Napier in 2008, his only international century.

How, 33, is the only player to be part of partnerships of over 400 in first class cricket, 300 in List A cricket and 200 in T20 cricket.

He led CD for six seasons, including winning the 2008 T20 title and the Plunket Shield last year.

Can't help but think that whole debacle over CD's selection for the T20 tournament has precipitated this to at least some extent.

Damn, thought he might continue for a couple more years but I guess he just cbf, especially when Malan made it clear he's not undroppable.

Was a great servant to CD. Good luck to him in life after cricket.
