Are we really going to pretend that Tim Southee...

1. how many tests in the last two years has tim played compared to roach?

2. if the overall stats mean nothing why bother having them then?
Nobody said they mean nothing, the point that other people are making is that they don't mean everything.

3. they played on the same tracks in the caribbean recently and like i said Kemar was the best pacer of the lot

You're free to your opinions..i just happen to believe they are way off the mark
.

Fair enough, likewise.

Possibly but you could probably pick a good three years out of anyone's career. I really don't see that his record away has been that all-encompassing.
But that isn't what is happening though. Southee was a young bowler in his early twenties who just wasn't good enough for test cricket, mentally and more importantly physically. He was eventually dropped, came back, and since then, for the past 30 odd months been nothing short of outstanding. If you believe he'll revert back to his early self than fair enough, but I wouldn't count on it.

But isn't this a current form kinda thing? Early career and people's opinions of where he might be headed in the future don't really matter that much surely?

Southee's career average, like Vettori's and Williamson's, is a victim of the fact that NZ has to play our most talented players much earlier than other nations because we don't have the same quality of domestic set-up in which they can be groomed before being declared ready.

If you want to get a fix on where he is as a bowler now, probably a 24 average would be more representative of his current ability.

5outhee ousted samithee during that 7/64 game imo. his recall in india after someone or other got themselves dropped (was it marto?) was when things changed.

since then he's taken 78 wickets @ 21

Yeah. Taste victory. Steyn > McGrath.
You know, Marshall, Steyn, and McGrath would be the best pace bowling combo OS. All three of them great with both the old ball and the new ball, with good reverse swing skills as well. All three have performed awesomely everywhere. And they are all lion hearts capable of bowling long spells, and play for long stretches without injury. nice variety as well. Low overall strike rate too. Perfect pace attack :)

LOL yes compare the last two years and leave out THAT TIM PLAYED MORE THAN DOUBLE THE MATCHES!

It's funny that despite those stats tim still far behind in the overall average!!..i wonder why?

The overall stats speak for themselves!!..i don't even know how anyone can deny that.
How can you explain Roach's overseas average being 38?

if it's not enough matches, then you can't compare the two just in the way you couldn't compare Hussey after 10 tests to Bradman. Not enough sample size.

Long enough to go past form IMO.

In other news, Southee named in ICC Test team of the Year.

Warner
Williamson
Sangakkara
de Villers
Root
Mathews
Johnson
Broad
Steyn
Herath
Southee

I was talking about them IN THE SAME SERIES!!..30 OVERS or 8 MATCHES?...erm yeah no difference there!!. :D .
I think you should drop it Windie - Roach has only really bowled against the Kiwis out of the top 8 nations in the last two years so he really doesn't come into the frame for this thread. So whether or not he outbowled Southee in that series is irrelevant - even though it proved to be an interesting tangent for you to bring up.
If you continue to push your argument that he be considered in the argument you are going to derail the thread which I am sure you don't want to do.

No Harris is ludicrous
I could see
Southee Steyn Johnson Herath but I don't agree with it.

But if you're picking 4 quicks...

OverratedSanity all of the picked bowlers already had someone else from their country in the team.
